It's not the first time you've been told to kill a man, but is it the first time you've been told to kill a friend? S01E17 Company Man
@judasisgayriot i don't. i don't. and i'm SO grateful that you giffed this scene honestly bc god my feelings.
trying to keep this short bc anything longer should really be a fic but. i'm so eternally fascinated with Noah Bennet's morality and growth over the course of his series. and also i'm personally invested in this plot in particular bc DAMMIT BUT I LOVE CLAUDE SM AND I WANNA KNOW MORE ABOUT HIS DAMN BACKSTORY THAN TINY CRUMBS 😭😭😭
..ahem, but i digress. really better to put all of that into my fic. just one more thing: i like to think that this haunted Noah. i like to think that he never forgot that he killed a man who trusted him, who truly considered him a friend, despite everything telling him not to. because (at least according to the comics) Noah didn't want to hurt Claude either. but he considered it an inevitability when he started seeing signs of him abandoning the Company's cause in favor of protecting 'those like him' (yes there's a comic bit where Claude lies (letting someone escape) and Noah notices, and hates that he notices bc now Claude is 'flagged').
and i just. i just think that's so damn juicy, redeeming someone from that point. like, i'll say this much for my fic right now: there'll be a bit where Claude's gf (yes i made an OC for that sue me; first and probably last time i write self-inserts, i just genuinely think it works here) breaks into the Bennets' home with the goal of killing Sandra in revenge Matt-style. she doesn't go through with it, of course, goes home and starts planning to fake her own death instead (longer story), but her hatred for Noah never fades. even as Claude starts forgiving him, eventually, it doesn't.
and that's not very self-insert of me, really, bc i'm all about that forgiveness, but i think it works.
arthur petrelli is hilarious to me bc he's so fucking evil and his god complex (or "better than god" complex) is insane but, given the scope of his abilities in mental manipulation, it's sorta bizarre that he didn't take it further, particularly with nathan. like ok you've been reading your son's mind his whole life in order to better control him and 'correct' his 'flaws' (which sparks A LOT of questions wrt nathan's relationship with peter but. i won't get into that rn), you know that his nature is at odds with your expectations and he's just barely keeping it together, sooo why not use the other aspects of that power to mold him into the man you'd like him to be? we know that arthur has no qualms about using powers to force ppl to behave/feel a certain way, and nathan's whole vibe when he's in politician mode is already so uncanny i can't really imagine that scrambling his mind a bit would be anything but an improvement for arthur's purposes. which leads me to the EXTREMELY BANAL conclusion that arthur prefers manipulating ppl the old-fashioned way as much as possible bc it satisfies his ego
and of course it speaks to the extent to which narcissistic men project themselves onto their sons. arthur treating nathan (the son he acknowledges at all) as an extension of himself, refusing to accept that what he demands of nathan could only be achieved by stepford wives-ing him into a new person. any perceived failure or weakness of nathan's interpreted by arthur as a poor reflection of himself, especially given other characters' remarks about nathan reminding them of a younger arthur. and arthur being so fucking affronted by Baby's First Act of Defiance that he decides to kill nathan over it, which, again, is so funny bc he never even tries to solve that dilemma with telepathy ? same method he could've used to convince his son to stop pursuing a single legal case he'd rather use to convince his wife that murdering their son is a great idea. even from arthur's fucked up loveless pov, he's irrationally scrapping a nearly 40-year investment that 1) literally cannot be replaced 2) still has plenty of potential to be profitable, which makes the attempt(s) read even moreso as a petty temper tantrum stemming from his belief that he deserves unquestioned domain over everything and everyone.
anyways there's so much to be said about the self-defeating nature of evil and how the object of power is power and whatever but this shit is so banal it makes my eyes glaze overrrrrr arthur petrelli !! you dime-a-dozen disney ass villain you trite motherfucker you crusty dusty republican FLOP
Ur right Arthur is such a flop ‼️‼️but he is so evil it would border on comical if it weren’t for the fact that Nathan is so irrevocably fucked up by it all. Rly interesting question of whether he DID use his abilities to fuck up Nathan’s mind at all or preferred like. Manually fucking with him so to speak with good old fashioned emotional abuse. Raising him in the evil panopticon did such a number on him already tho tbf
I think there’s a parallel with Angela and how she sees Nathan too - she is very much not stupid and is incredibly manipulative in her own right and skilled at it, but she sort of wilfully doesn’t want to believe certain things about Nathan - that he’s not quite this strong ambitious yet obedient shill who will carry out their plan to the letter and let millions of people die, ESPECIALLY his feelings towards Peter that she constantly downplays whenever she gets a chance even though logically she also knows what’s really going on there. Hello mrs dreams the future and ‘I knew long before either of you two did’ like… Even though she herself calls him a sap who’d be lost at the sight of sad weepy eyes, she also lies to herself constantly about that.
Arthur not wanting to believe that there’s something ‘wrong’ or defective about Nathan, not wanting to admit he’d have to mindfuck him to get him to be that unfeeling automaton attack dog he seems to want him to be, rather than his son just being like that naturally, because it reflects poorly on him that he’s actually ‘a sap’. Interesting little similarity with Angela. There are some moments you understand why they’re together even though Angela at least has some morals and feels love and regret, etc.
Thing I think about most of all re Arthur/Nathan is ‘I made you’. Such a chilling statement delivered so casually but also as a threat. You made him and you made him defective and broken sorry he has love in his heart </3
@judasisgayriot not even getting into the Petrellicest of it all (unprecedented i know), i just. Wow 😭😭
Nathan right before he’s about to die:
possessive/protective Peter
one of my favorite aspects of peter's super-amnesia being instantly cured by hearing nathan's name (moment of silence to reflect on such a bold display of soulmate magic................................................................................................................................................................................................................amen) and his resulting flood of memories of nathan is that one of them isn't even a memory of nathan, it's a memory of a dream peter had about nathan . . . which is just as real, and in many ways the realest, bc peter's subconscious perception of nathan is much closer to the truth than the Nathan™ that nathan is trying to be, and by extension more vulnerable about the intensity of his feelings for peter, which nathan is rarely able to express and peter is rarely able to believe on a conscious level ANYWAYSSSS point being i love how all the details of that scene emphasize the underlying emotions over the surface level state of their relationship, and how this ties into the rest of s2's consistent (& deeply unsubtle) framing of their relationship as romantic. nathan's behavior in the wake of peter's disappearance which reads in every conceivable way as the coping mechanisms of a grieving widow. repeated suggestions from the ppl in amnesiac!peter's orbit that he has a girlfriend back home who's looking for him, meanwhile nathan is the one back home looking for him. their wedding photo, which frequently and invariably highlights the significance + ambiguous nature of their relationship but is given extra weight in this context bc we're specifically primed to think of this item as a symbol of romantic devotion prior to its reveal ("maybe there's a love letter in there"). peter being torn btwn caitlin and the deeply buried memory of nathan, punctuated by peter kissing caitlin with one hand touching her face and his other hand in a death grip on the mystery box containing the wedding photo + his means to find his way home. peter being told to think about what matters most to him and immediately taking their wedding photo out of his pocket bc he may not know but he fucking Knows!!!! his name is nathan!!!!!!!
crazy that S2 is so marred by writers strike stuff/thought of as The Bad One (hello, S3 exists)/rly does have some boring interminable bits in it but also the more I think about the show as a whole, justice for S2 it's the best Nathan content in the entire show IMO and the way the Petrellis are apart for most of it and don't get to even see each other until the end but it's still WAY up there for The Grand Petrellicest Romance of It All/Insane Soulmate Moments etc. It's a romance between these two lovers who have been ripped apart and want to find their way back to each other!
There is no explanation for Peter regaining all his memories upon remembering Nathan other than Petrellicest Soulmateism Magic!!
I think in post-canon Nathan lives somehow au (which I enjoy dabbling in despite being the tragedy lover) there needs to be a real Reckoning for Peter as he realises just what a huge unstable needy insecure mentally ill mess Nathan is and just how close he actually is to collapse and honestly I think once Peter actually engaged with that and not with the idealised version of Nathan he has constructed, it would break his heart, he would put his all into protecting Nathan and taking care of him the way Nathan has protected him. But he would need to Engage with that first and I feel like there’s something so juicy about the concept. Yeah babe the man you love is a huge mess

i made this on a boiling hot bus Very delirious and It Looks Worse now than when i made it but Whatever. I enjoy this scene a Normal amount
Heroes catches another bad break.
a sad day for all those who hoped that the series would return in a new version
luv how early-show Peter is big eyes cuteys uke sweet little bro like Nathan help me I am but a baby boy 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 then you start to get some more insight into what a mess Nathan is and by the end he’s a trembling broken mess of a person who the vastly more stable and competent (somehow) Peter needs to like gently hold and put back together lest he collapse like a fragile porcelain bird
@judasisgayriot Nathan is so much less stable and it's so painful that Peter doesn't seeee thattttt until it's so damn late basically too late
another assumption i've been treating as #confirmed #fact is that angela's fake story about arthur's depression + suicide attempts was a real story about nathan. the best lies containing an element of truth and all that
@judasisgayriot with all that pain i hope you forgive that i'm choosing to focus on your tangent
Nathan’s ability is about so much. Flying literally representing ultimate freedom and escape and wrapped up inside a man literally more repressed and stifled than anyone else. His revulsion and fear at his own power which is like the number one thing nearly anyone would say when asked what superpower they’d like to have, yet it’s clearly something he also secretly yearns for (see his weirdly vulnerable little comment to Niki about wanting to ‘soar above the desert’ that he then quickly brushes off 😭). he’s literally a pilot! he’s wanted to fly since he was a kid and he literally CAN (but it also only manifests when he’s nearly 40 which seems like a super late age to manifest a power compared to nearly anyone else in the show, and only because he’s in a life or death situation). The whole thing with Peter thinking flying is HIS power because he’s so close to Nathan, dreaming about it constantly and hovering when he gets out of bed, the way that Nathan’s power literally carries him towards Peter again and again and is an integral part of their Soulmateism (flying to the treehouse… why there, of all places to go…, flying to peter in s4 when he has no idea where he is) Peter wanting to get the ability to fly back when Nathan is gone so he can feel close to himmmm…
and the fact that literally they experimented on him cause he was born without the genetic code for an ability and that’s the one he ended up with of all things!! You know Arthur was disappointed he didn’t get something more ‘useful’ for their plans, that it was just another way that he was inadequate in his father’s eyes. anyway as @foxstole put it:
also interesting how an alternative interpretation of nathan's ability lends itself to some of the fundamental misreadings of his character which r so fucking ubiquitous for some reason. flight interpreted as a manifestation of feelings of superiority, being above it all, total detachment, etc, which could be assumed of nathan when we first meet him but then unravels almost immediately unless you're approaching this character with willfully obtuse contempt lol meanwhile if your HEART is PURE you'll see that it's all about nathan's desire to escape his life as it is and transcend boundaries, and his reluctance to act on that desire speaks to a lack of self-assurance stemming from a lifetime of abuse and manipulation (and tbf also cultural norms, particularly wrt incest, which would give anyone pause...aside from peter who famously doesn't give a fuck). and every time nathan takes a step towards living an honest life, via some attempt to publicly acknowledge that he can fly, they fucking kill him 🚬
people literally fall for the mask Nathan puts up and don’t look deeper, which like sure if you watch a few episodes of the show from the beginning he does seem like just this fake (I mean. Everything about him IS fake) politician asshole who thinks he’s ‘above it all’ but it doesn’t even take far into season 1 to see that facade start to crumble and falter, like you do have to be obtuse about it to not see it, his power IS thematic in a really obvious way… also your point about the way Peter and Nathan respectively grew up and how it ties thematically to their powers is so plainly true and simultaneously galaxy brain. Peter doesn’t know anything different than just being able to be his authentic self (partially from parental neglect in the place of Nathan’s abuse, where they just sort of don’t gaf about him, and partially because he had Nathan to love him and that’s all he’s ever known and Nathan had no-one), and Nathan resents him for it a bit cause he can’t have that even though it’s what he wanted for Peter, but you’re RIGHT Nathan ‘gives’ his ability to peter too and Peter is free and happy and excited to use it and Nathan can’t do it and has to stand seething on the ground
Random Heroes → 51/∞
the way that peter has two (2) non-nathan love interests and with the first one his idea of flirting with her is to posit a scenario in which the two of them r siblings and with the second one their first kiss happens like two mins after her brother tells peter "you're family" . . . ok man
arthur and angela subjecting nathan to human experimentation and all kinds of abuse and manipulation from the moment he was born, for the purpose of using him as a puppet in their schemes, which eventually results in nathan developing basically the only power that could allow him to fuck up said schemes. arthur and angela having also brought into existence the one person who could inspire nathan to do such a thing. arthur and angela failing to anticipate this outcome, even with their combined powers of mind reading and precognition. machiavellian cringefail couple of all time
😭 Angela is convinced. CONVINNCED that Nathan is going to be the one who follows through their plan and Unites The World Don’t Worry That Peter Is Going To Be Used To Blow Up A City You Are A Good Boy Dog Puppet. like girl what the hell are you talking about
they’re not WRONG that he’s been moulded his whole life to be obedient to their whims but the lack of any thought at all given to his love for Peter, the Fatal Flaw in the plan that they did somehow not account for despite them essentially engineering a situation as the kids grew up where Peter is the only thing in the world that Nathan has to cling on to and the only thing he would find the strength to disobey them for. U HAVE 2 LAUGH 🤣
Arthur and Angela are fascinating to me their sheer levels of machiavellian evil they match each other’s freak to a dangerous level etc etc but like did they ever once actually achieve their goals 🤔 did you do it. Did you ‘save the world’. Did you achieve anything by experimenting on and thoroughly breaking your first born only to undo it all with the sweetest chaotic baby angel apple pie ever born and thus cancel it out. ‘I made you’ NOT THOROUGH ENOUGH TBH. and then Angela straight up tries to kill Arthur when he goes too far on the let’s kill Nathan with hammers for existing thing. Petrellis are the GOAT
"your incestous children r out here making u look dumb as hell" is a sentence for the history books
s2 peter, who has total amnesia, instinctively finding a way back to nathan before he's even consciously aware of who he's been missing 🤝 s4 nathan, who's suffering intense dissociation as a result of existing as a mind transfer in someone else's body, instinctively seeking peter out in every lucid moment + forcibly regaining control of said body when peter is calling out to him
@judasisgayriot we're all fine about it dw 😊
