Our Favorite Place
And just like that, the boyfriend left Celia there. What was he suddenly feeling? Guilt, blame, or was it his favorite, anger? Arthur closed his eyes, the anger in him was boiling but he preached the truth, what kind of man would leave his girl like that? That disgusted him, she gave him no real reason to leave her like that and just like that he ditched. The hurt on her face killed him, she was the all mighty Celia and now she was vulnerable in a place where she was a complete outcast. The music was louder this time and Jake was making his way towards the bar. Jake slapped him on the back,
“Alright bud, you’re good to take a break.”
Arthur didn't flinch but looked at Celia, she was talking to him, and over all the music he heard did he leave?
“Yeah, he left…” he answered her and closed his eyes.
Arthur hopped across the counter and landed beside Celia. He took her hand into his and began pulling her through the crowd of people that gathered as the next song came on. He gave Jake the look, the one that indicated that he had some shit to deal with, and that he’d be back as soon as he could.
“C’mon Celia,” he began “Just follow my voice”
Words ran through his head, the therapist always told him to never let the voices take control, and that he needed to be in control at all times. He wanted to hold her and bring her somewhere safe, she wanted to go home but he knew of a better place, one of their favorite places to go when they were kids. The crowds were growing bigger as the music changed to the next song, getting out of here was becoming difficult to do but he made it to the door. As he reached outside squeals from girls who were waiting to get in, the girls that attempted to convince him that they were the best girls in bed. He brought her towards the back where his bike was parked, he could hear girls calling for him but he ignored every single one pulling Celia with him. Celia was saying something to him but he was too distracted to answer her except get her to the place where she could find peace.
“It’s going to be okay, I’m taking you somewhere safe” he said to her as he placed a helmet on her head.
Arthur put his own helmet on and helped her get on first instructing her to place her feet accordingly while she found her footing. He gave her a quick run-down of how to sit safely. She was attentive when they got outside. Finally when he got on the bike he mentioned to hold onto him, she did so and somehow it felt right this time. A sigh escaped his lips as he started the engine on his bike and in less than 10 seconds they were moving. He could hear a small gasp from her lips; he could only imagine the difference. Feeling something versus not seeing it made riding another experience. Being in the city he was forced to drive the speed limit with the red lights. Celia’s shaking lessened but the clutch on him was still a little tight and he kinda liked it. It brought back memories when he held onto her for dear life when they were younger, but this time it was her holding onto him.
“It’s going to be okay, just relax.” He managed to yell to her “just hold on.”
After what felt like brake checking he managed to get out of the city and towards the outskirts where it was mostly all road which he preferred. He hit the gas and soon the bike was going faster, faster than usual but it felt great to be driving out here. It was exhilarating and he enjoyed driving at this speed. The adrenaline was pumping through him and he hoped that she wasn’t too afraid. For a moment he forgot where he was taking her, but reality came crashing back. They were almost there.
Applying the brakes he finally slowed down to a complete stop before putting the bike into park and turning the engine off. His baby had yet to fail him. He got off first and then took her hand to help her off. She seemed distracted and for a moment he couldn’t tell if she was panicking. He removed the helmet from her head and she was attempting to fix the helmet hair. Arthur removed his helmet before placing them onto the bike.
“I know you wanted to go home but I thought maybe bringing you here was a good idea…” he began trailing off as he took her arm pulling her gently with him.
Their favorite place, an abandoned playground -- still intact from when they went to school, was still kicking with swings, a jungle gym, a child’s dream. Parts of it was rusty from the lack of care but it didn’t matter, the swings was all they needed. The creepy thing about the playground was that it was near a graveyard, a local cemetery stretched through it so the noises were normal but that’s why the two of them loved coming here to think. The wind gently blew against them causing the swings to swing slightly making a noise as they got closer. Just from that noise, she should’ve known where he took her. He placed her hand on the swing and let go taking a seat on the other one beside her.
“I know coming here wasn't necessary but I don’t know…” he said softly as she took a seat
She was silent, maybe composing all of her thoughts and attempting to say something. The moon shone down on them giving him at least vision to see her and the park altogether.
“Are you doing okay? I’m not exactly the best at words…you know me…”
What the fuck dude
The music was perfect tonight, the DJ did listen to his suggestions and the crowd went wild at the selection of music. The bar, as usual, was packed with girls slipping their numbers on napkins back to him and all he could do was smirk at them and assure them that he’d be able to talk to them when he took a break from the bar. The ladies were swooning over him but even though all the ladies seemed to be interested in him, he did his good deed and helped introduce these ladies to a few single guys that came by every night asking him for tips to getting it with the ladies; Arthur assured them that he’d introduce them. One girl always came to visit, you could say they were a thing but she was the go-to girl for sex and a good time. He called their relationship ‘friends with benefits’ and he was okay with that.
“Hello Arthur.”
Her voice purred as she took a seat in her usual spot putting a hand on the counter. Arthur making drinks for a party of ladies smiled when he heard her voice. There was always something about her that made him go crazy and he showed it when they had sex. As he slid the drinks down to the party he turned to his lovely guest.
“Hello Tori.” He leaned in towards her taking her hand into his and planting a gentle kiss on her knuckles. “What can I get you tonight?” he asked as he let go of her hand and cross his arms on the counter keeping his distance close to her.
Victoria, who went as Tori, bit her lip and then smiled. He always seemed to know what to say to make a girl swoon. “I’ll take a cosmo, but I wanna be sober when you’re on break.” She winked at him with a smile on her face as Arthur placed her drink in front of her. “Meet me in the usual spot in an hour.” He said to her before leaning in to place a kiss on her lips. Tori chuckled softly and disappeared into the crowd drink in hand. Oh how much he liked her. Tori had olive skin color with long, wavy curls that brought together a brown eyed beauty with perfect eyebrows, small nose and flawless skin. Being from a large chested family she was gifted with natural large breasts which she had no problem showing off when she wanted something. Tonight she wore a low cut strapless dress which exposed a lot of cleavage and knowing from experiences with her she only wore this dress when she wanted a lot more than usual.
The clock was ticking and it was almost time for his break until his partner in crime would take his shift for an hour and then the two would work together. Arthur was excited to know that tonight was going to be a good night especially with an olive skinned bombshell that was ready for him. Arthur had about thirty minutes before Jake came in and he spotted Jake enjoying himself on the dance floor with a lady he was very fond of lately. There was even talk that he may make a commitment with this girl which Arthur didn’t believe would happen. He Arthur let the music take control of his body and soon he was in his mojo, his comfort zone, and he was serving drinks left and right easily while the tips came pouring in from customers. Strangely enough his usual customers (who were men) tipped heavy because Arthur had done what he had promised which was get them girls and he did just that and some even actually got married. It was a pleasure to help a fellow guy out especially since he couldn’t get a girl in his younger days. And then he had his other usual customers (female) who were more than willing to pay heavy for something extra from him. One could say he was an undercover prostitute at the club but it brought it more revenue, his boss couldn’t complain but told him to keep doing what he’s doing. It was a win-win situation after all, casual sex which ladies and barely legal girls were willing to pay for his ‘services’ and tonight he counted at least five ladies who ordered him as a drink.
Arthur was making drinks so fast that he even threw some tricks in that he had been practicing and tonight the tricks came out on top and applause from both sides of the bar came and he bowed as he passed the drinks down the bar to the gentleman and his companion at the bar tonight. But during that time more people gathered at the bar and seats were being taken as his usuals left to go dance. He stopped to talk to a small party of college girls who were there to take their recently turned 21st friend out to legally get drunk. She was gorgeous, long blond hair that stretched halfway down her back and blue eyes with a cute little nose and luscious pink colored lips.
“Well Happy Birthday Allison…glad you’re here to celebrate your 21st,” he began “Since it’s official today your drinks are on the house by yours truly.” He pointed to himself and brought out shots to get them started. “Remember now…don’t get too shitfaced; a stunning girl like yourself wouldn’t look great passed out unless you wanted to be in bed with that guy over there.” He pointed to a sad lonely man who was clearly out of it and passed out and then leaned in closer so that she could only hear him. “Unless you’d rather be passed out somewhere with me.” He whispered in her ear before smiling at her friends who were curious to see what he had said to her before leaving to the other side of the bar to find a gentleman waving him down.
“Hey, what can I get you?”
But her voice made it clear. “Well shit Celia, I figured I left my wallet there when I left.” He laughed and tried to match a name with this face that was standing behind her with a hand tightly on her waist. She mentioned free drinks tonight and he had no problem with that, it was something to break his train of thought of determining who this guy was. “I can get you free drinks tonight,” he began attempting to go through the list in his head. “This one is called ‘silk panties’” placing a drink in front of Celia and then brought a regular scotch for her friend. But once the drinks were placed he could feel the gaze from this guy and it was beginning to feel uncomfortable, who the hell was this guy? Celia had mind reading skills because she introduced the guy to him. There was something about him that he didn’t like it and it wasn’t just how he acted around her. He was possessive, that was something that seemed obvious to the eye but also protective which wasn’t a bad thing unless it got to the point of controlling. Finally he got a name, Percy, Percy Burks. Arthur held a hand out to him and Percy shook it. Strong grip, this guy didn’t like him already.
“Well you came at a great time actually, this is around the time where the music slows down a bit and you can more drinks from my partner in crime who’s taking over for me in a bit.” He began but then noticed that Celia leaned in to talk to him. Moving in, he didn’t think she was actually being serious about his offer but hey there was always space. Before he could say a word she was pulled back hard. This was unexpected.
This was the time where he tried to work his magic and help his best friend get out of this situation, he was only doing her a favor and if moving in was such a big deal then maybe he’d convince having her move in with her own boyfriend afterall, why should this be an issue? Words swarmed his head with how it should be said and then it was like the guy was throwing her away like she was completely useless.
“She’s blind! You have no idea what you’re getting yourself into!”
It made sense and it answered some questions that popped up earlier when they met. And for a moment there was silence in the room, it was just like the bad timing of a different song.
“You make that sound like it’s a bad thing. I’ve grown up with this girl and I owe her my life for all that she’s done for me in the past. So what she’s blind, she’s always been independent and yeah she may need a hand here and there from time to time but hey that’s what you’re supposed to do as her boyfriend right? I’m not here to lecture you on how to treat your girlfriend because I’ll be honest, I haven’t exactly settled down myself but I know well enough that if you’re going to be in a relationship with someone who may be disabled in one way doesn’t mean you go around telling people secrets like this which I’m sure she’s said many times to you not to say to anyone and you take care of them no matter what even if it’s the little things that they may need help with. You’ve already put yourself in bad spot in my eyes, the least you can do is be good to her and listen when she says not to tell secrets to anyone even her old best friend from school. But hear me out alright, I’m not trying to create any problems right now but if you’re willing to apologize to her and mean it I’ll be willing to forget that this incident ever happened.”
It was a long speech and he wasn’t done explaining himself. “If you’re still hung up about the whole situation I’ll let you come by and inspect the place for yourself to make sure that it’s suitable for Celia so that you can be assured that NOTHING will be going on between us when you’re not there or whatever else is going through your thick head. I’m just trying to help my best friend out because for once I can actually be helpful to her rather than getting beat up from bigger guys.” He glanced over at Celia who looked hurt from Percy’s words but she seemed better knowing that it was his turn to stand up for her and be that best friend that she needed right now.
Let's Party
His eyes were focused on her face and he knew something was different. Most of the time eyes followed motion but her eyes to be in one spot at all time when he shifted which could mean that she was blind but why else would her eyes stay in one spot. But she moved the conversation forward and he chuckled to himself. Arthur couldn’t remember the last time he felt happy. The last time he talked this much was forever ago, maybe reuniting with Celia was a good thing afterall.
“The ladies? I suppose they flock, but I think they have this idea that they actually have a chance when I have no interest in anyone. But if being your wimp is important then I supposed I can make an exception.”
It was true though, Arthur wanted sex but they wanted more. But in a way they did get what they wanted as well, a piece of him that they’d never forget. But he was okay with just having casual sex, no commitment, and he was still richer than he was before. Her hands wandered to his arm and he tensed up from her touch, he hadn’t felt something gentle since high school. Every hit he took were punches and nails on his back from the nights of being with girls from the bar but nothing as gentle as her hand.
“Oh, Arthur, I feel like you hate all human beings,” Arthur laughed softly “I don’t hate everyone, I just don’t like the company of some people.” Arthur watched her expression change and then just like that she was close to him, her mouth near his ear, and suddenly he found himself remembering those times in high school when she would take care of any problem he had and held him when everything seemed to be bad. She was like a sister to him and he loved that about her, she was a wonderful “sister” to him.
“I could put your drinks on my tab so sure, I’ll give you the address.” He began “It’s about 10 blocks away on central ave, right on the corner where the line starts. Once you see the line go around the corner you know you’re in the right spot.”
She nodded at his directions and then continued on to filling him in with her life story during the few years they were apart filling in on her degree status and being stuck in her parent’s basement. For some reason he piped up eager to let her know that he did have an extra room.
“I have an extra room if you’re interested. And yes I still have video games if you cared that much.” He chuckled at her eagerness to play and her confidence, oh how he loved her confidence. And part of him was scared to let her back into his new life, his new lifestyle with alcohol, cigars, women, and sex. Was she ready to see his new life and live with him as a roommate or would she kindly decline? His head was screaming that she declined but other parts of him said otherwise. Arthur took a deep breath in awaiting her response but glanced to the window to find that it had cleared up from before. Then he heard the clock on the wall make a sound to indicate an hour had gone by. Where had the time gone?
“I don’t mean to bail but I gotta get to work for ten, you’re welcome to stop by sometime tonight if you want.” He fumbled around his pocket looking for his phone and managed to fish it out of his back pocket. “Give me your number so I can text you mine.” Arthur was fast on his feet as Celia spoke her although she did give a little fight. “Celia I think we’ll have to find a day where we’re both free just give me your number.” He was a little forceful and she could hear it in his tone, but he had to go. He sent her a text to her phone before he gave her a hug before running out.
Arthur ran, time was not on his side tonight. Once he reached his place he fumbled through his pockets to find his key and let himself in. His thoughts were running wild from trying to figure out what to wear at the bar tonight to just talking to Celia again. She hadn’t changed, but he did, and for some reason he had a feeling that it bothered her a little. Arthur wasn’t her wimpy, little brother to take care of or the skinny kid with bones that could be crushed easily or the geeky kid that could fit into school lockers. Arthur didn’t miss those days and honestly he wouldn’t change anything since then. Deciding on a long, black dress shirt, he topped it off with a skinny tie and jeans; a classic look for most bartenders and easy to breathe in. He rolled the sleeves up to his elbows and he was on his way. Something stopped him in his tracks, he was missing something. Where was his wallet? Arthur tried to think back to every place he was at today and then it hit him, he left it with Celia. It must have fallen out of his pocket when he ran out of there and he sighed. There was no time to get it now, maybe this was fate telling him that he needed to see Celia sooner than later.
He checked his watch and he still had five minutes left to get there. As he neared the busy streets the line heading into the bar was long and loud which meant tonight was going to be busy which meant he was going to do well tonight. Some ladies whistled at him as he walked by and he winked at them. Some called his name and gave him the look which was their way of saying ‘I’ll meet you in the back.’ And he had a few of those looks come his way which meant he was really going to be busy tonight. The bouncer, Phil gave him one of those looks.
“Remember that you’re closing tonight.” Phil called to him as Arthur headed inside. “We’ll see about that Phil, 10 bucks says it’s not me.” He yelled back heading through the dark hall which lead to a ginormous room with a disco light and his second home, the bar. The bar itself stretched from one end of the room till about halfway through the room. The DJ on tonight was preparing before they were going to let everyone in to dance and enjoy themselves. Arthur was smiling in the dimly lit room as he made his way behind the sleek bar that now had LED lights to light it up. The bar used to be wood, but they changed it to a see through material with lights to give the bar more of a dance club vibe to it and personally he enjoyed it. Luckily he got away with so much behind the bar that some people never noticed the small things that happened with him.
Arthur took a rag to the counter wiping it to make sure that it was clean and ready for the drink orders. He did a quick check to make sure every bottle was in its spot and then he gave the DJ a nod which meant for him to start the music. As soon as the music got louder the crowd got closer inside and soon, it was time to party.
