The Bechdel Test was a critical film test created by Alison Bechdel in her 1985 comic Dykes to Watch Out For. The test is simple and involves three criteria:
1. There are two women in the film.
2. The women talk to each other.
3. The women talk to each other about something other than men.
This is a surprisingly hard test for many movies to pass. In fact, the highest grossing movie of all time, Avatar, even fails the test. True, movies can pass the test and still have problematic themes—that’s to say, passing the test doesn’t truly make a movie “feminist” or not. But having more than two women in movies that don’t just fawn over men would be a great way to up representation of women in media, and therefore leadership.
