In October of 2025, Tokamak Energy—a commercial nuclear fusion company based in the UK—released the first of its kind color footage that captured charged plasma inside of their ST40 Tokamak reactor.
The bulk of hydrogen plasma within a start-up is too hot (100 mil° C) to emit visible light. We are initially able to perceive the coolest, outer edge of the reactor's un-ionized, deuterium fuel (pink/blue). Once the ionized Lithium (green) is injected, to cool the chamber, it sheds an electron by ionizing the deuterium and begins to glow deep red.
The ST40 reactor's plasma pulses currently last about 0.2 seconds. This footage was made possible by recording the moment through a heat-shielded porthole w/ a camera capable of rendering 16,000fps.
