Habib in Mali, who I drew via Zoom a couple of weeks ago for my #NickDrawsNationals pandemic portraits project. It’s not often I get to draw a bonafide celebrity during this project, but Habib Koité is legit famous as a Malian guitarist who has toured the world, worked with famous US blues artists, and released many hit albums. It was a pleasure and honour to meet him. I like my drawing, although he said his face looks too “rond”. I did most of the drawing after our session, from video stills – there were a lot of interruptions and technical glitches during our call. I think this is the first time I’ve drawn someone with dreads – I sometimes feel like a barber, chatting away while working on my subject’s hairdo! An important detail to point out: the amulet Habib wears around his neck to ward off evil spirits. Introducing Dawn Cole. 2 Colour Risograph. A3. Dawn Cole is an artist working from her studio in Birchington on the North Kent Coast. A conceptual artist, Cole’s work takes its starting point from archives. Dawn’s work is developed as a result of extensive research and can be seen as a mixture of history and story-telling, fact and fiction. Check out her extensive works here at dawncole.co.uk . For my isolation residency with Project Duna in June, I made this work Piercing the Distance based on the Zoom conference I had offered called Mutual Support for Artists in Uncertain Times. Starting from the question “What do you need?”, I took a transcript from the artists’ responses which I then turned into a visual poem. Some of the transcript also comes from Somya Dhiman’s talk on Women & Identity. The other part to the piece is a movement improvisation also based on the transcript, as during the call Ana Paula Miranda had told me she wanted us to find a way to collaborate at a distance. She will respond to the video with a painting and so the work will continue to grow.
