Two more self-portraits, one by Paul Cezanne and the other by Picasso

I like the contrast between the two images and how different self-portraits can be. The marks made by Picasso are very scratchy and I really like the variation in colour used to create the skin tone, even when so much is outlined in heavy black. I would like to try a self-portrait with a heavier line, unsure of what subject though. Cezanne’s self-portrait is far more stereotypical with more of an emphasis on representation - but the brushstrokes used are still really expressive and loose in places.

Cy Twombly

Cy Twombly born in Lexington, Virginia painted a work that illustrates many of the abiding engagements of his practice. Untitled is divided into two zones by a horizontal line about two thirds of the way up. Across the bottom edge of the canvas, Twombly has scribbled a textual fragment gleaned from the poet Sappho: “But their heart turned cold + they dropped their wings.” The phrase, suggesting a hovering between higher and lower realms, conjures up a distant classical realm, even as the grappling, awkward hand renders the words materially present. 

Twombly's work uses up a lot of spaces and colour which drift off the actual picture just like graffiti does when spray painting.

Richard Long Artist

Richard long is a painter, artist and photographer who works using the style of journey through typography. Richard Long born 2 June 1945. Long is the only artist to be shortlisted for the Turner Prize four times, and he is reputed to have refused the prize in 1984. He was nominated in 1984, 1987, 1988 and he then won the award in 1989 for White Water Line.

He collects words that describe the place his in through what the atmosphere is like, how it effects his senses, and what type of colours are implied on the interior designs. He then uses illustrator and photography to combine the collections of words to the shapes or what his photographed to look similar.
