Had some fun city adventures this Sunday walking the Open Streets on the upper west side #embraceyouravenue, all the way down to @timessquarenyc before hopping back on the subway to head home after another day of #writeatthemuseum with @wordwestpress (I posted more pictures of the museum @stopwritingalone). When @juliacameronlive challenges us to take an #ArtistsDate for one hour a week in she tells us to think back to our childhood. What did you enjoy doing as a child? Give yourself the time and space to play that way again. I always struggle with doing Artist’s Dates — coming up with them is one issue, but then actually telling the fam that I have found a fun thing to do and no one but me is invited? That’s the worst! Well, last night I got to it and it was wonderful. When I was a child, my family was frustrated (maybe they still are?) with what to get me as a gift — I wasn’t into dolls, my catholic school uniformed life took away any interest in style and clothing, so their girlie-gift options all fell flat. But jigsaw puzzles were always a win! I’d lay them out on the floor next to my bed, put them together on a big piece of cardboard and slide them under my bed when I went to sleep. I’d spend hours with my stereo on and me on the floor (typically with my dog by my side) and I’d put the puzzle together — oftentimes staying up way past bedtime, feeling like time stopped for me while I worked. I stopped doing jigsaw puzzles years ago. For one, no one was buying them for me. Second, I couldn’t figure out what I’d do with the completed ones - clear contact hanging on my bedroom wall just didn’t feel like the vibe I was going for these days... But in reading #TheListeningPath, I thought again of my puzzles and came up with an idea: I made my own puzzle of my @stopwritingalone logo on @zazzle! I bought a frame for it and it will hang in my office! Last night was my first Artist’s date. I sat on the closet floor in my office, set up my phone to play the Walter Mosley Masterclass while I got to work. My son was asleep and my husband was online with friends. It was supposed to be an hour. When Walter Mosley finished, I opened up my Black Buck audiobook and let that play while I continued — not noticing my husband went off to bed! My Artist’s Date last FOUR HOURS and I had to force myself to walk away just to go to bed at 3:13AM! I can’t wait to get back to my play and finish my puzzle poster!
