One of the many perks of working at Marvel Studios is I often get to work with abundantly generous and über-talented individuals. One such person is Jacob Johnston, writer of the last few installments of “The Art of” Marvel Studios hardcovers (and also writer-director-production designer-extraordinaire).
I met Jacob some-odd years ago when he was an intern for one of the other departments and I was happy to hear when he landed the gig of Marvel Studios Visual Development Coordinator-- for those of you not in the know, the Visual Development Team is comprised of some of the finest talent of concept artists working in the movie industry today-- and as we started churning out the “Art of” books, Jacob became the absolutely necessary conduit with which we were able to cull through the, literally, hundreds of concept art designs that would ultimately make it into those gorgeous coffee table editions-- and those were just Ryan Meinerding’s Captain America costumes!
As we continued to work together, we talked over each other’s creative side projects; and were even lucky enough to collaborate on those once every blue moon! (SEE: *cough* NO TOUCHING *cough cough*)
Anyhoo, it was only a matter of time (and the natural order of things) that when we were looking to fill the role of writer on those magnificent books, the choice was obvious: Jacob had been there, seen and done that, and now, I’m proud to say, wrote the books about it. :-P
If you ever get the opportunity to work with this guy, it will be phenomenal for you-- and I will be envious, as that would mean he’d have even less time to work with ME!
