It’d had been a long time since he activated his boosters but with the fire that only a taunt about his height could produce, R2 signaled them to power up. Spluttering a few times, first one and then the other flared to life and R2′s stout form lifted off the ground. Granted, he didn’t move as smoothly as he once did, jerking and jolting this way and that with the old boosters, but he finally reached the indicated shelf with the jar of droid wax, extending a fine manipulator to get it.
R2 clamped onto the desired jar and whistled triumphantly, spinning in the air to ‘accidentally’ knock Han in the nose. That showed him!
❝Filswik — ! ❞ Han cursed as he clutched his face, his glare flaring bright and dangerous as the droid floated down to the floor again. What the hells was it and these droids that stuck to Luke like glue? By the core, Han remembered the day he met them; how could he forget? Since he’d met Ben, Luke, Goldenrod, and this R2 unit, everything in his life had changed. Whether it was for the better or for the worse, Han had yet to truly figure that out for himself. At the moment, the only thing Han comprehended was his irritation. Tight and thick in his chest, his mood worsened with every ticking second.
How did a droid unit get programmed with such a personality?
Moreover, one that couldn’t even speak Basic?
Given, Goldenrod could speak Basic, but he still didn’t have much of a personality. At least, not to Han. What Goldenrod was — well, a golden rod. That’s about all he was good for. There to look shiny and talk too karkin’ much. That and mouthing off at the worst of times, ( generally when backing up someone other than him ), left to Han wonder more than once, where exactly the button was for shutting the damned thing down was.
( He had yet to discover its location, but it was a work in progress ).
As for R2, the droid was useful at times and loads better than Goldenrod, but even Han had his limits. The Corellian narrowed his eyes at the astromech still beeping in triumph. Had he slept one hour less, he supposed he wouldn’t mind giving Luke’s droid a taste of his boot. Ahh — but there it was again — the reason why he actively tolerated these two in his ship, to begin with. ❝I was offerin’ my help, ya know.❞ Han rolled his eyes and went to the cabinet next to where R2 had retrieved its needed item. While rummaging, he continued to hold his nose. Maybe that would help keep the snide comments in his mouth.
