Sculptor, Susie MacMurray has musical manuscripts fall from the ceiling in her newest commissioned work. Ranging in all different styles, every piece of sheet music communicates a history and sound. A classical musician turned artist, MacMurray’s newest work lets the viewer be pulled into the aesthetics of music and its transcription.

Serpentine Gallery: Elaine Sturtevant: Leaps, Jumps and Bumps—Now-August 26

From the artist who shamelessly rebranded works by Warhol, Lichtenstein and Duchamp, comes a new show at the Serpentine Gallery. Sturtevant’s latest show explores the repetition and reproduction of art in our post-internet world. Provocative and (at times) perverse, Sturtevant’s work guarantees a reaction in her latest show.

Leandro Erlich’s Dalston House—Now- 4th August

Installation artist Leandro Erlich has brought his latest piece to East London. An optical illusion that makes the viewer appear as though they are climbing a Victorian house. Commissioned by the Barbican, the Dalston House is only in Hackney until August 4th.

  The Art of Curiosity: Curious Duke Gallery—4th July- 17th August

The vanguards of today’s art world are showcased in this curious exhibition at the Curious Duke Gallery. Eighteen artists work from a variety of mediums that captivate and inspire the viewer. The three-hundred year old gallery will be home to these curiosities for just five weeks. So, what do you say, are you curious?

  The Bling Ring: Theatres all across the UK—5th July

 Sofia Coppola’s latest film takes-on hip-hop, celebrity and white privileged youth in this drama-thriller. Emma Watson leads her gang of adolescent friends in a string of burglaries in the Hollywood Hills. Inspired by true accounts of celebrities’ homes being robbed, it should prove to be an exciting film.

Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait:  Jewish Musuem—3rd July- 15th September

In memory of the late Amy Winehouse, the Jewish Museum has created a portrait of a person behind the icon. The exhibit shows her childhood, her family life and love of music in this tender display of photographs and keepsakes. 

  Anna Barriball, Snowflakes: Oasis Academy John Williams, South Bristol—Permanent installation

The paper snowflakes are made by students and staff and painted all over the schools grounds. Much of Anna Barriball’s work is based around the elapsing of time. Whether that be the time spent looking at or spray painting all 720 snowflakes.

Generation Pi at Kinetica Art Fair Ambika P3, London 28 February - 3 March 2013

Kinetica Art Fair took place in London at the turn of the month, and one particular work that caught the attention of visitors was that of Jonty Hurwitz’s Generation Pi. Exhibited in public for the first time at the premier techno-art convention, the sculptures had been responsible for an online superstorm when they first surfaced online at This Is Colossal in January; attracting tens of millions of views overnight. The collection of works use new-age algorithm’s to make anamorphic reality out of abstract ideas. They explore the contexts of image and object with both playfulness and dramatic visual effect. What is of course most crucial to these works is how the focal point and source of amazement exists in a reflective image that occupies absolutely no spatial reality. It is something that we as humans cannot access and (quite literally) cannot put our finger on. This acts as an engaging launch-pad for Hurwitz’s ongoing vocal exploration of objective and abstractive reality in today’s world. It is one that basks in the wonder of technology and meta-data, something that has so rapidly become an integral pillar to human civilisation. Speaking at the fair, he states that ‘in the modern lives that we live, we’re leaving this gigantic resource of meta information out on the broader cloud, that represents in quite a way fundamental way who we are. The reality is that we do exist beyond ourselves, and we are the first generation that lives outside of our bodies.’ The meta-ego concept that Hurwitz introduces applies the Freudian model to the Twitter generation. It suggests that the modern individual is continuously imprinted into things like internet search history, messaging logs, card transactions, facebook statuses, geo-tags, music playlists and personalised advertising. It is about an infinite and fragmentary myriad of data that progressively forms an abstract portrait of yourself amid cyberspace, much like the image we see reflected in these sculptures. ‘Servers on the other side of the world can hold a piece of your intentions; that data is real and it exists as part of you.’ In his endeavours Hurwitz is aiming to open up a vital discourse on the developments of technology and its influence over the many fundamental questions of reality, that themselves go back for centuries. What he presents aims to re-energise and re-address many of these archaic philosophical conversations by vastly expanding horizons and re-defining the boundaries of human perception. By asking so many questions of a technological terrain that is still expanding at exponential rates, Hurwitz’s greatest challenge lies in ever being able to answer them all.
