Art Therapy: Healthy Benefits of Indulging in Art
Art encourages people to express themselves. For this reason, it has become a tool that caters to the emotional and mental well-being of individuals. Psychotherapists use art therapy to give their clients the chance to connect with them. The idea of art therapy is that creative expression encourages individuals to heal mentally and emotionally. It almost sounds unbelievably shocking to hear there is healing in arts, and why it has something to do with psychotherapy. The answer to that is simple. Art therapy encourages people to express themselves creatively without being judged. This is a way of purging the stress factors that trouble them. More than that, it also allows them to acknowledge who they really are and what they truly feel. This is their way of opening up and acknowledging the problems they have denied for so long. What Are the Benefits of Art Therapy? There are numerous benefits of art therapy, and below are four of them: Alleviate Symptoms of Depression The number of clinically depressed people have surged at an epidemic rate. According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015, more than 300 million people were diagnosed with the disorder. Most people who suffered from depression were women. What aggravates the condition is the fear of expressing people’s feelings to others. As a consequence, an imbalance in their hormones occur. Art therapy gives these individuals the chance to relieve themselves from their troubles. This method helps combat the chemical imbalances that result to depression. With the guidance of professionals, depressed individuals start to open up. Mitigates Traumas Developed from the Past In the development of traumas, individuals avoid confronting them. Most often than not, they develop unhealthy habits as a distraction. However, avoidance of traumas never resolves the traumas themselves. Instead, the trauma worsens over time and would resurface in the future. Art helps individuals confront their traumas without being judged. As they confront and acknowledge their feelings, they start to move forward. A Healthy Distraction In times of great distress, we splurge on unhealthy habits as a way to distract ourselves. However, these unhealthy ways of coping with distress only provide a momentary high. They are highly detrimental to our well-being, which only exacerbates the situation. Engaging in artistic activities helps people keep their minds off of negative thoughts. More than that, they are able to enhance their artistic skills without further damaging themselves. Helps Connect with Other Individuals Some people find it difficult to connect with others due to fear of expressing their thoughts or emotions. However, art therapy promotes self-expression and thereby develop their skills to communicate. Art’s purpose is too great for us to reduce its definition to developing beautiful senseless subjects only. It’s a medium that encourages personal growth and fosters healing to our well-being. So, when you feel troubled, indulge yourself with therapeutic artistic activities. Read the full article
