'Vocal utopias in improvised music' May 6th, 11am, Podium Lecture Theatre, London College of Communication

This presentation is part of a research project about improvised music and the notion of silence that explores social constructions, identities and forms of community through the boundaries of playing and listening. In this work, I compare the differences and similarities between silence and improvisation, study a specific use of silence by improvisers during the nineties and develop the possible consequences of this historical, musical and social process through my own work. For this talk I will focus on one aspect of this research: it’s starting point is concerned with the possibilities of defining what improvised music is. The question I ask myself here is how can I elaborate a discourse about improvisation, how can I develop any research outside of the practice or how can I put together what (following the etymology of the word improvisation) can not be seen in advance, with a theoretical approach that requires distance and a position of contemplation. To do this I will examine the similarities and differences between improvisation and the 'vocal utopias' described by the historian Michel de Certeau which are also known as glossolalias.
