An Inconvenient Truth & it’s use of storytelling through techniques. (Documentary Analysis)
An Inconvenient truth is a 2006 documentary film directed by Davis Guggenheim and presented by Al Gore. The documentary focuses on the topic of global warming and the impending future that awaits the earth if not treated properly. The story is told through Al Gore’s point of view as he talks about his past experiences that led him to his current alarming view on global warming, while giving statistics and facts alongside some comedic segments.
In the film, Al Gore was very easy to understand, as he uses simple terms to let the audience understand the information he’s trying to convey more easily. This was accompanied by his use of a more dramatic, impactful and straight confronting facts alongside his video evidence. In fact he covers an extensive list of examples from all over the world to back up his claims. He shows clips from South America, Africa, Antarctica, and more, to show how global warming affected each part of the world. He emphasizes that Global warming is a global issue and it is not just seen at one place. There was a scene where you can see an ice glacier melt, here Al Gore talks about how the glacier is melting due to global warming and that it is real footage filmed by a colleague. However this clip has been speculated to be taken from the opening shot of the film “”The Day After Tomorrow” and when examined both scenes look almost identical. This raises the question whether it is okay to use Hollywood computer generated shots in a documentary to support the truth and facts and to lie about it as well.
Throughout the video, Al Gore made sure to be consistent with his use of straight confronting facts and scientific statistics, such as: how to actually measure CO2 level in a way that is very easy to understand. He also makes use of scientific graphs very effectively, keeping every graph very simple and limiting it to not more than just a couple of words per graph thus ensuring that the audience understands what the graph means and what it is trying to show.
Al Gore tells the story in a very personal manner as well. He uses words like “my friend showed me this last week” and “I went there with my daughter”. He does this to bring the audience close to him and to capture the audience’s emotional attention. He enforces this by using his life as example and proof of why global warming is important. This is evident, for example, in a scene he talks about his son who suffered an accident and how it changed him to act for his son’s future. Furthermore, this was accompanied by a melancholic emotional music which creates an emotional connection between the viewer and his content. Throughout the documentary, Al Gore plays with the emotions of the viewer whether it is through his own life experiences, even getting so personal as to talk about the story of his son or his father, or using videos of natural disasters that were brought about by global warming. This includes clips of flooding, fires and third world countries suffering from global warming and of course it is all set to melancholic music.
Other elements that Al Gore incorporated in his videos are Comedy and Satire. He uses them to not only keep the audience entertained but to balance the content in the film and to defame officials against global warming. He incorporates the comedy into his talk, such as when he uses the robotic ladder to show the ‘off-the-chart’ increasing temperature and CO2 emission. Although it could be inappropriate to use comedy when talking about such a serious topic, it could also be good because it stops the audience from feeling too overwhelmed and shutting their mind off from the issue. At the same time, it could also bring the risk of having viewers not taking the content seriously due to the humour involved. One scene which uses comedy very effectively is the animated scene featured in Futurama which Al Gore included in his presentation. This animation was effective because it explained the problem of global warming in an easier way to understand way especially for younger viewers, who are an important demographic viewer as they will be the future of the world.
Heavily cemented into the film is also Al Gore’s failed candidacy for Presidency. He dramaticized this and depicts it as a tragedy that made him learn a lesson and take act in giving seminars of global warming. He then also defames his opponent in the election when he states, “he made a pledge to keep emission level low even though he did not keep that pledge”. Through these scenes we can observe that he is very political in his talk, to the extent where you can see an agenda behind it.
