For this work I wanted to explore the energy of the seemingly inanimate object that is the plastic bag. Curious with the ticking noises that continue well after a bag is left alone, I have created an audio track consisting purely of these sounds. The track starts slow and almost silent. I wanted to initially reflect on how this commonplace object is regularly perceived. The sound begins to grow as a way of exploring the uncontrollable movement of the objects on their own. As it gets louder, you can realise that you actually cannot stop the sound if you tried. However the audio does fade out at the end because bags are not that energetic and have a limit to their independence.
For this work, I recorded many plastic bags then cut, overlaid and looped them to create an overwhelming cacophony towards the middle of the piece.
My first work evidently explores the control, or lack there of, that we as humans have over our manufactured products. Although we create them, our complex relationship with and control over these products remains vague, as they can take on a life of their own.
