Chapter 48: A Work of Art
Her eyes moved between his and she swallowed, pushing past the anger and the grief and the questions to just hone in on this one thing she needed to tell him while he was here in front of her. “Draco I—I haven’t been whole in ten years. I was broken the same way you were during the war and there was always something missing within me after that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. But I haven’t felt this close to whole again until you; I feel like I’ve been missing you for years.”
Draco’s throat dipped and he licked his lips, keeping his features neutral because she was sure he knew what was coming, but didn’t want to let his guard down until it was all the way out there, “And how do two broken pieces fit together, in your mind?”
“Like—” her thoughts reeled as she tried to find a way to put it all into words, “—like a piece of art that was never meant to be perfect,” his head tilted, but a tightness lifted in her chest as she realized the freeing feeling of knowing she’d found the right words to adequately express it and she gave a light puff of air as her lip quirked upwards, “Like something you could study up close for hours and not make sense of, but when you step back and take it in, it’s powerful and beautiful in a completely unspoken way. We’re a blurred painting of contradicting colors and indistinct lines that doesn’t need to be understood, because you just feel everything you need to when you look at it. You and me—it fits like a priceless, abstract work of art.”
