Summary:

Draco Malfoy is a—self-described—reformed man, ten years after the war. He’d worked hard to muddle through his mistakes, learn from his past and reckon with his future. Now the only thing left on his list is to apologize to Hermione Granger, who has so far refused to hear a word of it. Luckily, his Ministry-mandated community service hours have finally brought him to her department, which makes this his best chance at reconciliation. And he's not going to blow it.

“Granger,” Draco looked up from the papers in his hands and was met with a stony look. “It’s clear you’d prefer I was not here.” He kept his tone even and conversational.

“We needed the help,” Hermione said as she side-stepped the implication.

“And I am here to help. I’ve requested to complete service hours in your department for—”

“Five years. I’m aware. I’ve denied it every time. This is not a department that I want your influence in. But we are desperate for help leading up to program season and you were my only option. That is why you’re here.”

Ouch. He felt the slice of her words, but drew in a breath through his nose with a singular nod to lighten their impact. "Then I will get to my paperwork.”

“You know,” Draco said casually, “I’m not here to antagonize you. As much as you’d like to tell yourself I am.”

“I don’t really care if you’re trying to or not. Your presence is antagonizing regardless of your intention.” Hermione didn’t even look at him.

He tilted his head with an eyebrow-raised shrug. “Yeah, I heard that a lot ten years ago. Thought I’d gotten to a point where I was on the other side of making people feel that way.”

“Not in my eyes, Malfoy.”

He grinned to himself with a glance over at her, unaffected, "Not for now, anyway."

My friend says you can’t be an adult, have a full time job and be a fanfic writer at the same time, because you’ll have to sacrifice your writing, fandom activities, for your career. And I just… don’t think that’s the case? At all? Unless I’m missing something? Unless I’m doing it wrong by being employed and still writing fanfics?

Excerpt from Chapter 63/63 of The Art of Ascension:

“I love our dysfunctional little family,” Hermione said with a laugh to herself once the last of their friends had disappeared through the green flames, replaying the night in her mind. She lay her head on Draco's shoulder, alcohol making her smile easy and her eyes heavy, despite their place sitting on the floor, leaning against the side of the armchair.

“I do, too,” he said sleepily, head lulling back against the fabric of the arm.

“I just want this feeling to last forever, you know. Can’t we just have nights like these forever?”

“We can,” he nodded. “You can have me forever and I can have you and we can have all of them. Just marry me and the deal is done.” He said it casually, without a thought and Hermione laughed. He picked his head up from the chair and looked down at her, “I’m not joking, love. Marry me. Let’s do this forever.”

“Draco, you’ve drank too much tonight,” she waved him off, “You’re not thinking clearly.”

“It’s the only thing in the world that’s ever been clear,” he shrugged, “You and me.” Crookshanks strutted over to them, grazing his tail against Draco’s arm as Draco’s head lolled towards the cat, “And Crooks. You, me and Crooks. This is the only forever I want. Our friends come with the package. But if forever looks like anything else, you may as well off me now.”

Hermione huffed, “You’re being dramatic.”

“I don’t think so,” he shrugged again.

She laughed and pushed herself up, pulling her dress over her hips and draping a leg across him to straddle his lap as she leaned down and kissed him. It was sloppy and it was sleepy, but it was so damn lovely. “Let’s drag ourselves to bed, Draco. I can barely keep my eyes open.”

“And I can barely keep my hands off of you,” he responded, pulling her lips back to his as his hand slipped the strap of her dress off her shoulder, the fabric over her chest going with it as he cupped her breast, his other hand sliding down to sink into her hip. She loved what she felt in his kiss—it was unhurried and wanting and easy. Easy like their night had been; easy in the best, most carefree and confident way. Forever sounded nice, like this.
