THURSDAY NIGHT TASTING 6-8PM: AR WINE POURING RUBÉN DÍAZ!!!
Rubén Díaz: Fire in the Sky of Sierra de Gredos
The most significant (and our favorite) new importer is Ariana Rolich – the rock star of AR Wine. She discovered our new favorite Spanish producer, Rubén Díaz, a few years ago and felt so passionate about his wines that she acquired an importer’s license to bring them to the states. A proud descendant of grape growers in Cerbreros, the historic heart of the Sierra de Gredos, Diaz is a vital connector between the region's most important producers and Cebreros' top vineyard sites, as well as a leading force in the Gredos for sustaining local wine-making traditions and for pushing the limits experimenting with the region's unique white varieties and forgotten zones of old-vine, high-altitude red Garnacha. All of his wines are microvinifications or blends thereof. His white wines, made from Chasselas Doré and Albillo Real, exhibit a dazzling range of styles: fresh and light, skin macerated, sous-voile, oxidative, and many permutations thereof. His reds are studies of Cebreros terroir though pure Garnacha grown on granite and schist at varying altitudes and expositions. They exhibit all the power, precision and length for which the Sierra de Gredos is gaining fame. Ariana works primarily with producers from this almost secret high-altitude area in the Sierra de Gredos mountains. We are very happy to introduce both her and these wines to you. Please join us tonight at the Lions Club for WINE, BREAD, CHEESE, and VINYL!
Rubén Díaz, Sierra de Gredos Cebreros 'Dore' Chasselas 2018
100% Chasselas Doré from Finca La Coronilla, a 70-year-old vineyard on decomposed granitic sandy soils at 630m altitude in the Village of Cebreros (approximately 90 minutes west of Madrid in the Sierra de Gredos mountain range). It was fermented with 5 days of skin contact and vinified in stainless steel. Doré is not like other Chasselas, expressing more herbaceous notes than the austere white fruit we're accustomed to, with an interesting spice note and a bit of tannic grip from the skins. We love this wine and many of you already do too. If you haven’t tasted this yet, you need to! $20
Rubén Díaz 2017 Sierra de Gredos Cebreros “Fiorel-la” Albillo Crianza Biologica
100% Albillo Real, skin fermented & raised under flor. (Hello sherry lovers - this is one of those exception cases where this type of wine is made outside of Jerez.) Grown on decomposed granitic sands in the village of Cebreros. In 2017, the white grape growing zone of Cebreros was nearly destroyed by hail. The small crop that survived was delicious, resulting in vibrant and mineral wines. "Fiorel-la" was fermented with five days of skin contact, then raised in stainless steel under a light layer of flor. Only 280 liters produced! $30
Rubén Díaz, Sierra de Gredos Cebreros, 'Paso de Cebra' Garnacha 2016
Some wines are like a pocket knife, good for many things and nice to have on hand. And a few of those are like a really lean, beautiful, old pocket knife that you really want to carry everywhere you go. The Cebra is 100% Garnacha from a blend of vineyards: 80% from six small old vineyards, age 70-100+ years old, on granitic sandy soils in Cebreros and 20% from Finca La Escalera, a single vineyard of 70-year-old Garnacha planted on decomposed granitic sands at at nearly 1100 meters altitude in San Bartolome de Pinares. A fresh & accessible introduction to magic of the Gredos. $20
Rubén Díaz Vinadores de Gredos, Sierra de Gredos 'La Escalera' Garnacha 2016
Just north of Cebreros is the lesser-known Gredos mountain village of San Bartolome de Pinares, old-vine Garnacha growing in pure granitic sandy soils at 1100m altitude, taking on an electric-fruited, long, and mineral expression of Grenache. La Escalera is five barrels of Garnacha from 70-year-old vines on decomposed granitic sands, bended with a touch of Garnacha from a 100-year-old vineyard on the steep, schistous slopes of Cebreros, and it displays the purity, intensity, and finesse of Garnacha from the Gredos at a very affordable price. $23
