Johanna palms the glass door and it hisses open with a slow exhale. The room where the latest vessel is housed is as gray as the rest of them, though there are splashes of color, the echoes of another’s care: cut flowers in a vase on the counter, a simple puzzle with all but a few pieces assembled, a stack of blankets folded at the couch - neatly, carefully, short side first, with the hallmark fastidiousness of her old friend and colleague. It is like an enrichment enclosure for a child, built by someone who knows of children only from what he’s read in biology textbooks. The thing Volkarin calls ‘Rook’ is turning the pages of a paperback as the door sinks closed. Frankenstein, no doubt, Johanna wagers with a mental snort, but as her eyes flick to the cover she sees it is Beowulf. Pah. There’s a monster in that one, too. And an all-consuming obsession. “Are you enjoying that dusty old drivel,” she says without preamble, “or are you reading it to please him?” She crosses her arms, taking in the pale hair, pale eyes, pale skin, lashes impossibly thick for a body that has passed through corpsedom and emerged shriven into the light. The girl’s beauty has all the colorless delicacy of the Venus de Milo, before her limbs of marble were ripped apart. “Convincing him you’re the perfect realization of his ceaseless drudgery?” Rook lowers the book to meet Johanna’s gaze. Her movements are slow, deliberate. “Would you believe me if I said I was?” “Oho!” Johanna chuckles. “I can see why he’s panting like a bitch in heat over you.”
