Summary: The four soulmates sit down to discuss their relationship and boundaries.
Words: 2951

Notes: This chapter got so close to the Talking About Our Issues that it was meant to be and then I got an idea and it derailed into fluff. At this point I'm pretty sure this story is going to end up quite long because I'm not very good at sticking to a plan.
Warnings: this is all Patton's POV so slightly unreliable narrator I guess, some swearing, mention of someone being slightly drunk
Also apologies for any random British words in here. Some of it may be accidental, some of it is because I didn't want to use the American word. I hope it doesn't get annoying.

All afternoon, Patton served customers and watched his soulmates chat from across the cafe. The others had said they wanted to hang around so they could all be together properly for a while, and for the first time in his life Patton couldn't wait for the last customer to leave.
He tried very hard not to let the feeling of being left out return, as he watched them talk and laugh more and more freely while the hours ticked by, but it was nigh on impossible.
For years, Patton had a hold on his emotions, keeping them locked up and out of the way by focussing on other things. But one moment of letting his guard down and allowing hope to flood back had made that so much harder. Barely a few hours since he'd admitted to being their soulmates and he was already regretting it.
They were so happy together, was Patton capable of that anymore?
He didn't notice the way the conversation was stilted. He didn't notice the longing glances the other three sent his way every other minute. He didn't hear how many times they each held off from talking too much about themselves, not wanting to leave him out of things.
Between the constant flow of customers and the thoughts that circled round his head, blaming himself for five years of silence, how could he?
The last customer left five minutes before closing time. For all of thirty seconds, Patton wondered whether closing up early would seem too needy before Roman was out of his chair and flipping the sign on the door to closed, bringing the A-board inside in the process.
He grinned at Patton's surprised expression.
"What? I don't want to wait another minute to get to talk to you properly!"
"Aw kiddo!" Patton internally winced at his own tone. His customer service voice.
Truth be told, he couldn't really remember how he used to act around people he knew, it had been so long since- "I still have to clear up but you don't have to wait around for me, I'll be able to join in just fine!"
To his own ears, his voice sounded too falsely chipper, though he doubted the others would notice.
Logan frowned a little, looking slightly confused in an adorable way. "Patton, it would be completely irrational to have any important relationship discussions with a quarter of our group indisposed."
"Yeah Pat. Just tell us what to do, we'll help you clear up."
"O-oh." Why were they going out of their way to be so nice to him? No one ever did that. "You really don't have to! I don't mind-"
"Nonsense!" Roman stopped wrestling with the A-board to put it away and looked up. "Of course we don't have to help, but we want to. Now how does one work this blasted thing-ah!"
It seemed Roman had found the catch for the A-board for it suddenly collapsed shut in his hands.
"Oh goodness are you okay?" Patton rushed over to him. What if he was hurt? Would he be angry? Would-
"I'm fine darling, really," Roman reached out a hand to gently cup Patton's cheek, "you mustn't fret so."
Patton's heart was threatening to beat out of his chest at the touch. It sent little shivers all through him. When was the last time someone touched him?
"Indeed. Right, would it be helpful if I were to put the chairs onto the tables now, or do you need to wipe them down first?"
"N-no I cleaned them as I went..."
"Excellent."
"You got any washing up you need doing?" Virgil asked.
"Oh I couldn't ask you to do that!" Patton tried to protest but Virgil just took that as a yes and disappeared into the kitchen with an "on it" as he went.
"And I shall start sweeping!"
"Oh really Roman I can-"
"If it was good enough for Cinderella, its good enough for me. Besides," he tucked a strand of hair behind Patton's ear, making his brain short circuit, "a prince must be chivalrous for his prince."
With a wink, Roman waltzed off to grab the broom and Patton, in a slight daze, wandered over to switch off the coffee machine. His soulmates were making quick work of tidying up, and if Patton didn't know better he would have said they seemed eager to get done quickly so they could talk to him.
But Patton did know better. The three of them were far too kind to leave Patton to do all the cleaning himself, and they wanted to be done so they could get back to their previous conversation. With each other.
Not him.
He told himself he had to stop being so self-centred and focussed on clearing away the remaining cakes from the counter.
The saying "many hands make light work" proved true, and the cafe was cleared up in no time at all. They turned all the main lights off, leaving only the lamps around the sofas in the back corner switched on, bathing the area in a gentle golden glow.
It looked positively romantic.
Roman kept readjusting the lights, the cushions, fiddling with the radiator, until Logan just grabbed his arm and pulled him down onto the sofa next to him.
"Everything is more than satisfactory, please sit down."
"But it has to be perfect!" Roman protested, trying to get up again.
"Princey, if you don't stay put I swear I will sit on you." Virgil threatened jokingly, plopping down into the seat opposite him.
Roman made some very offended noises and almost tired to get up again before Patton intervened.
"It really is lovely Roman, you don't need to worry so much."
"Says you!"
Logan raised an eyebrow. "Virgil, I do not believe you have a metaphorical leg to stand on when it comes to worrying, either."
Now it was Virgil's turn to act offended and Patton felt his heart sink a little. They already knew each other, and got on so well without him. They didn't really need him.
Had he only been included in this soul bond to make sure their own love story went smoothly?
What that it?
Patton pulled himself out of his head again to sit down and listen to what Logan was saying.
"Now, I believe the main purpose of this conversation is to discus how we wish to proceed with our relationship. Does anyone have any particularly major boundaries they would like to discus first?"
I'm ace.
Patton almost said it out-loud, but then had the sudden thought that it might come off as presumptuous, and bit his tongue. They barely knew each other! He mustn't assume they would even want that sort of relationship with him.
When no-one else spoke, Patton was relieved he hadn't said anything. He didn't to be the only one being difficult.
"In that case, may I propose that we keep this relationship platonic at first? I am open to being romantic with all of you but I do not wish to rush into anything."
"Yeah, I'd prefer that too actually. I- yeah..." Virgil trailed off like he had been about to elaborate on something but thought better of it.
Roman had a strange look on his face, gaze resting firmly on his hands. "How strictly platonic do you mean? Should I...would you prefer if I stopped with the flirting?"
A light blush appeared on Logan's cheeks. "I did not say romantic advances would be unwelcome...I am just not comfortable kissing and/or dating this early on."
"I just want to keep this as low stakes as possible until I've made sure I'm not gonna screw up somehow," Virgil shrugged, "its nothing personal."
Roman seemed relieved with that answer, nodding and sitting up a little straighter (ha).
Suddenly, Patton realised they were all looking at him questioningly. Were they seeking his input on this? He hadn't raised any objections so why...?
Oh, this was another opportunity for him to say his own boundaries. He should just be honest and say it.
I'm ace.
But he didn't even want to say it. Worries about whether it was presumptuous aside, he just didn't know these men well enough to be comfortable saying it. Well, if it really came to it, he supposed he could tell them some other time.
"I'm perfectly happy to go at your paces! I really don't mind!" The whole sentence came out awkwardly, his tone sounding off, but he felt better for not telling the whole truth. He hoped the others hadn't noticed.
Barely a few hours into knowing them and he was already lying.
Truly, he was happy to have whatever relationship the others wanted, at whatever pace - he didn't want to make them uncomfortable after all. But there was a small (read: very large) part of him that would have been far happier to rush into things head first, to stop holding back, to let himself fall in love with them in one go, to shower them with the affection they deserved.
Logan, so smart and curious. Roman, dramatic and talented. Virgil all sarcasm and gentle smiles. Each one of them so different and yet so equally wonderful.
And Patton always was lead by his heart.
Sure, he wasn't in love with them just yet, and maybe he wasn't even ready to do more than just hold hands, but he knew for certain he would fall sooner rather than later. It was a bit like watching a car crash and being able to slow down time only to delay the inevitable, not prevent it. Or standing on the edge of a cliff, about to tip over, waving your arms to try to stop the inevitable descent, even though it's futile.
He didn't know what he'd do if they never loved him back like that.
With a start, Patton realised they were all looking at him again.
"Oh sorry, I totally zoned out there for a second!"
"Yeah we saw, darling."
Patton felt a jolt of panic. Did they think he wasn't interested in getting to know them?
"You okay there Pat?"
"Heh yeah, sorry what were you saying?"
"I was proposing the next item in our agenda for this evening should be to properly introduce ourselves," Logan explained. "I realise it may have made more sense to have done that first..."
He trailed off and everyone looked at everyone else expectantly. No-one seemed to want to volunteer information, which sort of made sense. The other three probably didn't have anything much new to say to one another.
"Well..." he started hesitantly, seeing the others all look slightly relieved someone had broken the silence, "you know I'm Patton, I own this place, I do all the baking and stuff-"
"You do it all? On your own?" Roman gasped. "Does that not get lonely?"
"Sounds kinda stressful."
"Indeed. I had assumed you must have someone to help out in the kitchen, or on busier days. It does not sound very efficient."
Patton was glad for Logan's comment. He would not have liked to address what Roman said.
"Oh its fine! I do all the baking in the morning and most of what I need is out the front so I don't have to run back to the kitchen for it. Sure, it gets a bit hectic in busy times, but its nothing I can't handle." He punctuated his words with a grin, hoping to just move on.
"Well if you say so..." Roman seemed doubtful.
"And I've been running it for two years so I've got the hang of it now."
"Two years?" Virgil interrupted, "wait, how old are you?"
"Twenty. I moved here and opened this cafe when I was eighteen." Then he realised the others' surprise. "Yeah, I uh didn't go to college..." God, they must think he was so stupid!
"Well thats quite alright Patton," Logan said, tone surprisingly gentle, "Not everyone is suited to that sort of education, its a very narrow-minded system, and I'd say you are objectively the most successful of all of us."
"Logan you're like, really smart, why do you dislike the education system?" Virgil asked
"Yeah pocket protector, I thought you were training to be a teacher?"
"Just because I succeeded in the education system does not mean I think it is objectively good. I hope I will be able to use better teaching methods to give more people a chance."
"It's more that my parents just didn't think I was worth the money."
Everyone turned to look at Patton.
Oh no.
He didn't think they'd hear that.
He realised he was shrinking in on himself and made an effort to sit up straighter again.
"Anyway!" he said with forced brightness, "I knew you were studying to be a teacher but what subject are you teaching, Logan?"
"Pat..."
They were all still looking at him worriedly.
"Patton darling, please don't brush that off like its nothing." Roman was looking at him with so much concern it threatened to take his breath away. "We barely know each other so I'll understand if you're hesitant to talk about it, but if you ever need someone to talk to or just a shoulder to cry on, we are all here for you, okay?"
Patton couldn't speak. His throat was tight, his mouth was dry, his eyes stung. He didn't remember anyone ever actually saying that to him, let alone making good on their promise. It was all he could do to nod and shoot Roman a smile that felt like a far cry from his bright grins. It was small and sad.
We're here for you.
If only they actually wanted to be.
"I may not be the best at giving advice, but I will certainly always make time whenever any of you need me," Logan said, looking around at them all, Roman nodding along with him.
"Yeah same. I mean, I'm not the most comforting person but I can try," Virgil added.
Patton managed to find his voice again. "And I'll always be there for you whenever you kiddos need me too," he chirped, not quite back to his usual cheerfulness but pretty close.
There was a slight pause. The silence didn't feel so awkward now, just calm and contemplative. Then...
"Pat we're all older than you!"
Patton giggled at Virgil's mock confusion, a real, natural laugh for once.
(In that moment, Logan, Virgil and Roman all thought the exact same thing: it was the loveliest sound they had ever heard.)
"Oh I call everyone kiddo! But Roman, I thought you were in your last year of college, and you said your birthday's in June so you must be younger than me!"
"I took a gap year so I'm actually twenty one. Don't you remember the time I came in here tipsy after a show?"
"You were drunk? I thought you were just extra excitable that day!"
"Patton, sweetheart, I tried to climb on a table to sing I Can Go The Distance-"
"That was YOU?!?"
Patton blinked, glancing between Logan and Virgil who'd both just spoken and were now looking at each other in surprise.
"Oh goodness!" Patton burst out laughing. (Real. Genuine.) "I'd forgotten one day you were all here at the same time! It was so frustrating! I kept getting distracted trying to see if the other two were looking at you-"
"-but I was already leaving-" Logan interjected,
"-and I walked in, took one look at the crowd of theatre kids, decided fuck that and left."
"Virgil, I believe I held the door open for you on our way out."
"Oh my god you did!"
By this point Patton was a mess of giggles at the memory of Roman, who in hindsight was obviously drunk, trying to sing one song while another played in the background, getting the tune muddled, and pretending to sword fight with his co-star from the show. Roman was fanning his hands in front of his face to try and calm himself down, Virgil was failing spectacularly to control his grin, and Logan had rueful smile, and a soft look in his eye.
"The irony is quite astonishing, that was almost a month ago."
"What a shame that it wasn't my insatiable love for Disney that brought us together."
"Nope! It was Patton all the way!" Virgil slumped against Patton's shoulder as he spoke, making Patton tense up for a second at the contact he hadn't felt the likes of in years.
"Is this okay?" Virgil asked, looking up at Patton but not moving just yet. The angle meant he was gazing through his eyelashes and Patton thought he might combust at how beautiful he was.
"Yep!" was all he was able to squeak.
Virgil leaned in further, one arm wrapping around the back of his waist, and Patton found himself sighing. He was so warm. And so real.
It wasn't a proper hug, but it was the first thing like it Patton had since he left home. And it was wonderful.
Opposite them, Roman had thrown an arm across the back of the sofa, behind Logan, like that cinema-date cliche, and Logan hesitantly lent his head onto Roman's shoulder, encouraging the other to drop his arm onto his own shoulder and pull him in a little further.
Patton reached up to card his fingers through Virgil's hair, gazing at his other two soulmates as Longan entwined his fingers with Roman's, and they both gazed back.
In the dim golden light of the lamps, in their little corner of the cafe, it almost seemed too intimate for four men who'd only met that day, and were supposed to be taking it slow, but they were all thinking the same thing - this felt...right.

End notes: As evidenced by the writing process of this chapter, I am not very good at sticking to plans. So even though I have one, how long it takes to get there and what happens on the way will be probably more of a surprise to me than anyone else lol
Btw let me know if its confusing who is talking at which points. When I'm writing I have a clear voice in my head for how they each speak so I can't tell if its ambiguous or not.
Well it took me a hot second but I hope you liked it!
Patton was excited to one day meet his soulmate. They were going to be best buddies, eat cookies together, watch cartoons, have sleepovers, it was going to be amazing. Being born with a best friend out there somewhere was great!
Except maybe Patton had it wrong?
As he got older he started to notice that soulmates did more than that, they went on dates but that seemed fun and it was just like hanging out with your friends, they gave eachother gifts like flowers but thats cool too he wanted to give his friends presents, they held hands but he did that with his friends all the time, they... made out?
Kissing didn’t seem terrible, his mum kissed his head and that was nice and maybe a little peck on the lips would be ok but... kissing like... that... it seemed gross.
Would he have to do that when he met his soulmate? Gosh, he hoped not.
As he got older he learned about romance, something he had never really thought about but it explained his parents. But it just didn’t seem... as awesome as a spectacular friendship!
But he was starting to worry, what if when he met his soulmate, his soulmate wanted more than friendship?
Emile was excited to one day meet his soulmate. He wasn’t exactly sure why but he knew he was. He knew that soulmates were the most special and most important. He knew that when you met them you were meant to feel whole, whatever that meant. He knew that it was meant to be exciting so he was excited.
His parents were also excited when he first got his soulmark, they had a little celebratory party, it was great. The soulmark was great as well, it was a puppy! Emilie loved puppies! Did this mean his soulmate also loved puppies? He sure hoped so.
He never really thought much more about his soulmate or about soulmates in general. He just lived his life and knew that one day he would meet them and that it was going to be great, so there wasn’t much to think about and nothing to worry about.
Although this meant he was completely unprepared for meeting Patton.
It was the first day of highschool and Patton was shaking with excitement. He was going to meet new people and make new friends and maybe meet his soulmate, he ignored the part of him that was anxious about that, and he was going to be learning more things! It was great!
Then he met Emile. He squealed and hugged Emile, who hugged back, before they’d even introduced themselves. So they started dating.
Patton was so happy, Emile was everything he had hoped for and more, they watched cartoons, baked, cuddled, made puns, helped each other out when they were sad. They also held hands and went on dates. They were fun as well.
Emile was surprised when he met Patton and had asked his parents later what he was supposed to do now. So now they were dating. At first Emile wasn’t exactly sure what he was doing but it seemed like they were just friends with a fancy name and called hanging out going on a date, so everything seemed great.
And what people said were true, Patton was special and definitely became important to him as they dated over the years.
Then people started asking questions, usual ones such as when did you meet, what was your first date, how was your first kiss...
They’d never kissed. Other people found it weird. Emile didn’t think it was anyone’s business.
But Patton worried. Were they doing the soulmate thing right? Why hadn’t they kissed yet? Was it because of Patton? Did Emile want to kiss? Had he not because he was waiting for Patton to make the first move?
People were right, soulmates were supposed to kiss and they hadn’t. Patton was going to fix that even if he didn’t like it.
So, the next time they went on a date, Patton kissed Emile.
Emile was surprised, he hadn’t really thought of kissing Patton but he supposed it felt nice, so he kissed back.
Patton then parted his lips and Emile followed suit until they were making out.
Patton felt... gross. This didn’t feel right at all.
Emile felt... good. It was a pleasant experience... until he felt tears on his face.
He pulled back to see Patton crying.
Patton hadn’t meant to start crying. He tried to wipe them away but Emile just cupped his face and then pulled him into a hug, holding him just the way he liked. He sobbed harder.
It had felt so gross... was he broken? What was wrong with him, Emile had been enjoying himself and he’d gone and ruined it.
Emile didn’t know what was wrong. Was it the kiss or was it something else? He had no idea and he’d have to wait to ask.
When Patton had calmed down enough he pulled back and apologised and Emile was confused so Patton clarified that he’d ruined their first kiss. Emile disagreed and said it was great and Patton ruined nothing but, what’s wrong?
Patton trusted Emile with everything. They were so close but he was still hesitant. Would Emile leave him? No, not if continued to kiss him anyway. Honesty is the best policy.
So Patton told Emile about the feelings he felt around kissing.
Emile wasn’t surprised but he hadn’t known either. But he did know one thing, they weren’t going to kiss like that anymore.
Patton was surprised and then objected, Emile had liked the kiss.
Emile had but Patton was more important to him than kissing, Patton made him feel so much better by just being around than he’d felt with the kiss.
Patton blushed and shed more tears before saying he loved Emile.
Emiled loved him too.
Some time and research later they had words for themselves. Patton was aromantic and asexual. Emile was quiromantic and graysexual. And together they were in a queerplatonic relationship.
summary: Virgil tells Patton something, Patton has a confession to make in return (Aromantic!Patton)

Virgil is in Patton’s room watching the moral side color and scroll through recipe ideas on Pinterest. He came in here to tell Patton something, but Virgil can't help the anxiety building in his chest and he is fighting the urge to run.
Patton glances over at Virgil who is sitting in his chair next to him, “So, kiddo, was there a reason you came to see me, or did you just want some time together?” he asks with a smile, coloring the cute dog in is coloring book.
Virgil plays with his hoodie strings, “I uh, I actually have something I want to tell you.” He admits, looking anywhere but at Patton.
Patton smiles gently, setting his stuff aside and giving Virgil his full attention, “What is it, Virgil?”
Virgil hesitates, opening his mouth to speak and promptly closing it again.
Patton frowns, “You know, you can tell me anything. I'm not going to judge.”
Virgil takes a deep breath screws his eyes shut and lets it out, “I love you!” he says, curling in on himself a bit.
Patton smiles wide, it’s the first time Virgil had said that to him, “Aww I love you too, Kiddo!”
Virgil rubs at the back of his neck, “Patton, not, uh, not like that.”
“Hmm?” Patton tilts his head, confused.
“I’m in love with you Patton.” Virgil admits biting his lip, “Like, I like like you.”
Patton’s face softened, “Oh!” He exclaims softly, trying to figure out what to say and how to say what he needs to say, “Virgil, i'm flattered, and I love you too, but probably not in the same way as what you’re thinking.”
Virgil’s heart flips in his chest and he fights to swallow the lump in his throat, “What the heck does that mean?”
“I'm aromantic.” Patton tells him, looking for a hint of recognition in Virgil’s eyes
Virgil blinks and sticks his hands in the pockets of his hoodie, “Uh, okay, what the heck does that mean? I know you’re asexual, and you know i'm demisexual but... what’s aromantic?”
Patton nods, and spins in his rolling chair a bit, “Well, it’s similar to being asexual, but uh, it’s where you don't feel romantic attraction instead of not feeling sexual attraction. Does, does that make sense?”
Patton doesnt love him. He just made a fool of himself. He has to get out of here. Patton isn't going to want a relationship. How is he supposed to move on when he sees Patton everyday? Virgil nods, ignoring the pain in his chest. “That makes sense Patton. It does. I, uh, I guess you won’t want to try a relationship then. But uh, that’s okay. I understand, really. It’s fine. I wouldn't want to make you uncomfortable. Just, forget this ever happened.” Virgil stands, turning to the door.
Patton stands and grabs Virgil’s arm, “Wait, Virgil, I never said that. I never said I don't want to be in a relationship with you. I would love to be in a relationship with you.”
Virgil turns back to him, “But, but I thought you said..?”
Patton shakes his head giving Virgil a sad look, “I should've been clearer, but I thought you understood, sorry about that. Listen, I may not feel romantic attraction or sexual attraction towards you, but I would still really like to be in a relationship with you, if that’s okay.”
Virgil frowns, “How... how does that work? What would something like that even look like?”
Patton gives him a smile, “Let me explain.” He insists leading Virgil to sit on his bed, taking a seat next to him.
Patton takes a deep breath, “Have you ever heard of a queerplatonic relationship, or a QPR?” he asks.
The look on Virgil’s face gives him a clear no.
Patton nods thoughtfully, “I only found the term a few months ago, so i'm not surprised you haven’t heard of it. It’s essentially a relationship where one or more of the people in the relationship are aromantic, aro for short. So umm, QPRs are relationships where... uh, it’s basically a relationship that is based in platonic attraction. Umm, like how a relationship that an ace person is in would most likely be based on romantic attraction instead of sexual attraction. So how that works is that, the amount of romantic-coded aspects that the relationship has, really depends on the peoplein it. Like if two aro people are in a relationship and they are both sexually attracted to one another that’s going to look different than two aroaces being together and that’s going to look different from and aro person and an Alloromantic, a person who feels romantic attraction, being together. What i'm trying to say is a QPR might have a lot of romantically coded things in it, it might have none, or it could fall somewhere in the middle depending on who’s in the relationship.
Virgil nods, following along.
Patton smiles glad Virgil is willing to hear him out, “Here’s the catch, different things are romantic to different people. Like, some people think things are romantic and some people think those same things are platonic or sensual. Like for me, forehead kisses, cuddling and hand holding are platonic or sensual, but like kissing and making out are romantic. And i'm sometimes okay with kissing but not really ever okay with making out, but the line can be a but fuzzy sometimes. ...wait is this too much to process? Am I going through this too fast?”
Virgil is staring at Patton with wide eyes, “Uh I think I understand. Umm, so, a QPR? ...That’s the right acronym, right?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, a QPR is a relationship that has at least one aromantic person in it.. And is based in platonic attraction and/or aesthetic or sensual attraction... and may or may not have romantic elements to it?”
“Yeah, that’s exactly right!”
Virgil frowns, “Okay great, so why are you telling me this?” he asks, too busy processing to connect the dots.
Patton smiles at Virgil and takes a deep breath, “I would love to be in a QPR with you Virgil, would you want to be in a QPR with me? Would you be my QPP?”
Virgil blinks, “Wait, what’s a QPP?”
“A queerplatonic partner.” Patton explains.
Virgil smiles, “Oh, I, uh, yeah. I'd love to be your QPP. That sounds... great actually. Umm, what were you thinking that would look like... like between us, specifically?”
Patton takes Virgil’s hand in his, “Well, we can hold hands.” Virgil looks at their hands and smiles.
Patton smiles at the look on Virgil’s face, “We can cuddle, if you want.”
Virgil nods, he loves Patton’s cuddles.
Patton rubs his thumb over the back of Virgil’s hand idly as he talks, “We can hang out together, cook food and watch movies and just be together. We can talk to each other late into the night about the most random things, and laugh at each other’s jokes and make our own inside jokes.”
Virgil leans on Patton’s shoulder, “Can we call each other cute nicknames?”
Patton resists the urge to squeal, “Of course, like me calling you Stormcloud or prince of purple? Or my perfect knight?”
Virgil smirks, “I am darkness, I am... the night!” he says in his best Batman voice.
The two break into giggles, “Virgil! I meant like my knight in shining armor! But, that works too, if you like it.”
Virgil smiles, a blush creeping onto his face, “I like it, I uh, I like all of those. Can, umm, can I call you Sunshine, or Snickers or something?”
Patton beams, “Those names are so sweet! I love them!”
Virgil ducks his head and shyly asks, “Is it weird if I tell you I love you?”
Patton lifts Virgil’s head to look at him, “It’s fine, as long as you’re okay with knowing I mean it in the strongest platonic way when I say it back.”
Virgil’s smile fades a bit, “It’s a new thought for me, but i'm okay with it.”
Patton nods, bringing the hand under Virgil’s chin to rest on top of their interlaced hands, “This whole thing is going to be new, for both of us. I've never been in a QPR before, so we’ll be exploring this together.”
Virgil smiles, “Okay.”
Patton looks Virgil in the eyes, serious, “With this being such a new thing for us, I want to make sure you’re doing your best to communicate things with me. I want you to make sure to tell me if you don't like something, if you want to do something a little differently, or if you want to try something new. Please, please communicate things like that with me. I’ll be sure to do the same. I don't want to accidentally cross a boundary or not give you something i'd be happy to give because I didn't know you wanted it.”
Virgil nods, “I understand. I’ll do that.”
Patton smiles, “Thank you, stormcloud.”
Virgil blushes, “Can I... can I kiss you?”
Patton thinks for a moment, “Is a cheek kiss alright?”
Virgil nods and leans in, placing a kiss on Patton’s cheek.
Patton smiles, “Wanna cuddle a bit?”
“Please.”
Patton scoots back on his bed. He pulls a bunch of his blankets and pillows into a semicircle and lies down, making grabby hands at Virgil, who promptly joined him.
Patton adjusts, letting Virgil get comfortable and lay his head on his chest and place a hand on his belly.
Patton smiles and wraps an arm around Virgil, holding him close, and threads his fingers through Virgil’s hair with his other hand, “Is this okay?”
Virgil nuzzles into Patton and sighs, “This is perfect, thank you.”
“Of course.” Patton says, relaxing and just enjoying being with Virgil.
After a while Virgil whispers, “Patton, you awake?”

“Patton, dear?” Logan’s voice yells from their downstairs living room, Patton can tell he’s slightly out of breath even from right up in the master bedroom.
“Yes, lovebug?” he shouts back, setting down another box beside the others slowly stacking up and taking over one corner of the bedroom.
“Where did you put the bedroom lamp?” Logan says, there’s some shuffling around until Logan’s voice comes back louder now, Patton assumes he’s at the bottom of the stairs, “I can’t find it.”
Patton glances around the bare bedroom, their bedframe is built finally, the mattress plopped on top of it still with no sheets, pillows, or duvet on it. The wooden flooring covered in boxes and various furniture meant for their bedroom.
Their bedroom. Patton still feels thrilled that he can call this room, this house, theirs. That they own together. A step in the life they’re building together.
Perhaps buying a house has come a little late in their relationship, their parent’s having been bothering them both to hurry up and buy a house and, perhaps, to have kids for a while now, a while being practically since they first got together. But Patton doesn’t care. He knows Logan had commitment issues when they both started dating and Patton hadn’t wanted to push him too far. But after years of dating they finally got their own place, a little quaint house all of their own, just enough for a ‘starter home’ as Patton’s mom had put it.
Finally, Patton spots their lamp, a cute one with a blue purple galaxy print on that Patton insisted he bought for Logan for their housewarming, sitting right beside their bedroom television.
“It’s up here, Lo,” he shouts back, wincing when he turns around and realises that Logan’s just in the doorway and he needed not to yell at him, “sorry.”
Logan just smiles at him, that small, soft smile where his lips just tug up at the corners and his eyes crinkle so slightly, the fond look that’s reserved just for Patton.
“It’s alright, dear,” Logan says, coming closer to Patton, arms wrapping around his middle as Patton’s own gladly wind around him, and he presses a cheeky kiss to Logan’s nose.
They had met an autumn evening in early October. Barely past four the short bespectacled man had wandered into the library, small smile on his face and bag slung over his shoulder, a mission on his mind. And, well, that was all thrown out of the window at the appearance of the library’s newest member of staff. Patton had frozen, breath catching in his throat before he forced himself to swallow, wetting his lips and convincing himself to talk to the man with his dark hair slicked back perfectly, his black glasses a stark contrast to his pale skin.
Logan had stood there, all on his own, stacking the books in the teen’s section and Patton had grinned at the fact that he did have an excuse to talk to the tall, dark, and handsome man. So, he made his way over to the teen’s section, palms sweating with anticipation.
“Excuse me,” he had spoken, voice a little weak but loud enough to hear, and the man had turned, a pile of books in his arms, eyes widening at the interruption.
Logan would later confess after many dates and many days together that his brain did indeed short circuit at just seeing Patton, curled hair, freckles, and all. His mouth dry, brain trying to think up something to say.
“Can I help you?” he had asked in response, reminding himself that he’s very much at work, in his first week there too, so, he was determined to not mess anything up but make sure the local customers don’t dislike him either – Logan had been told many times in his life that he has a ‘resting bitch face’ at best and a stoic, dismissive appearance at worst.
But Patton had grinned and asked, “yes, actually, I was wondering if you had any recommendations for some children’s books, hopefully educational if you can.”
And Logan’s heart did… something. Perhaps not something in need of medical attention either. No, this was perhaps more emotionally connected.
“Ah, yes,” he spoke, uncharacteristically awkward, setting down the books in his arms on the trolley before ushering Patton over to the younger children’s section, “now what age range are you looking for?”
“Oh, about five to six years old,” Patton said, fiddling with the strap of his bag, unable to stop himself staring at the new worker as his eyes scanned the shelves. Those piercing baby blue’s so enchanting and mesmerising, Patton broke out of his trance when Logan knelt to the ground, picking out a few books absentmindedly.
“Here,” Logan said, passing the few books over to Patton who gladly took them into his sweaty hands, “those should be educational for the age range of your children.”
And, oh, Logan had assumed wrong. Well, kind of wrong.
“Oh! No, goodness,” Patton had sputtered, “I don’t have any kiddos of my own, I’m far too young and too single still, but they’re for my kiddos that I teach, I’m the kindergarten schoolteacher just down the road.”
Patton had enthusiastically explained how the children loved story time especially near the end of the day and he wanted to keep it mostly educationally for his children. And Logan had listened with rapt attention, watching the way Patton practically lit up the entire children’s section of the library with his big smile and bright eyes, hands flailing as he explained in more depth. Logan would gladly listen to him talk all day but after around fifteen minutes Logan had to inform the ray of sunshine in front of him that he had to get back to work.
“Oh, of course!” Patton exclaimed, smiling sheepishly as he moved the books from one hand to the other, reaching into the pocket of his cardigan and pulling out a pen, “do you mind if I give you my number so we could meet up again some time, I’d quite like to get to know you a bit better, if you don’t mind of course, I mean, you don’t have to, I just-.”
Logan had cut him off with a curt ‘yes’ and then didn’t stop staring at the blue ink on the back of his hand for the rest of the day. Immediately inserting the number into his phone when he retrieved his stuff from the break room at the end of the day, then sent off a simple ‘hello, this is Logan from the library’ text, realising that he didn’t actually give Patton his name when he met him. Then drove home to his small apartment. Smiling to himself when he stopped the car, realising he had three texts from a new number.
‘Hi Logan! This is Patton!’
‘Thank you so much for the book recommendations, I’ve read though a few, I’m sure my kiddos will love them!’
‘Oh! And I was wondering when your next day off is so I could possibly take you out for a coffee or something’
It took him all the way up the stairs to his apartment to think of an appropriate response and settles on ‘You’re very welcome, I am free this Thursday but am aware that you will not be if you work at the school every day, so, I have a half day on Sunday if you would like to meet?’
And he gets a very quick reply, as if Patton was waiting just as he is for his text.
‘Yes, I’d love that!’
That was the start of something… magical. Well, magical if you asked Patton. Awkward and weird and a bit tension-y if you asked Logan. But awkward acquaintances turned into a weird friendship which eventually transpired into a magical relationship. Into shy kisses and flushed cheeks, into soft murmurs of adoration and admissions of affection, into interlaced fingers and intertwined legs. And into serious conversations of ‘do you want’ and ‘is this okay’, of answers of ‘yes’ and ‘no’ and ‘I don’t know’.
But they worked, they clicked. Their personalities almost polar opposites melding so well together. Patton’s soft, bubbly attitude colliding against Logan’s stoic, stern attitude but Patton’s sad, low moments contrasted by Logan’s passionate, excitable moments.
And Patton presses another kiss to one cheek, then the other, and finally Logan’s lips, smiling into the kiss until his grin grows too wide and he’s pretty much unable to kiss his boyfriend.
“Sorry, I’m just so, so-” he cuts himself off with a little squeal and Logan practically drops him out of the hug in shock, watching as Patton bounces of the balls of his feet, “I can’t believe we are here! We live together, we own this place, this is ours, our future, our lives. I, oh goodness, I love you, lovebug.”
Patton finishes his loud declaration of love with another hug, arms squeezing around Logan’s midsection which he does when he’s particularly excited. So, Logan just drapes his arms over Patton’s shoulders, pressing a soft kiss into his fluffy hair, matted with sweat from carrying box after box into the house, and whispers, “I love you too, Patton, dear.”
He knows they have so much to unpack and the sun is still setting, they’ll not get it all done tonight, or even tomorrow. But now all that matters are him and Patton and their life together that’s advancing so rapidly, their beginning together.
“Patton, dear?” he says, voice barely above a whisper.
Patton hums in response, his grip loosening a little around Logan and he presses his cheek against his shoulder, ready to listen.
“How about we make the bed, set the television up, and eat in here watching some cartoons?” Logan asks.
“That sounds amazing, Lo,” Patton responds, voice muffled, breath soft against Logan’s neck which tickles ever so slightly.
“Glad you think so, dear,” Logan says, trying and very much failing to get out of Patton’s hold, then he smiles, bigger than before which Patton will be sad that he has missed, “you have to let me go to organise this mess.”
“But you’re warm and I love you,” Patton whines, fingers clasping at the back of Logan’s t-shirt to keep him there. And Logan can’t help softening at that, he knows it’s a dirty tactic Patton’s learned to use to get his own way over the years and it works so well. That doesn’t mean Logan’s always weak for it.
“Now, dear, come on,” Logan says, urging Patton away from him, “get on your comfy pyjamas or even your onesie after we’ve done the bed and all that, then I’m yours to cuddle for the night.”
Patton huffs dramatically but does let go of Logan finally, pouting adorably with his brows furrowed, and Logan just pats him on the head before side stepping him to get to the box full of their sheets.
Twenty minutes later, and enough whining complaints from Patton, their bedroom is more liveable in. The bed made with navy blue sheets, boxes in favour of bedside tables they don’t own yet, television temporarily placed atop their set of drawers which stand empty. Logan sits, in his checked pyjama bottoms and vest, against the headboard with Patton curled against his side watching the cartoons he’s chosen for the night. He knows he’ll need to move to get their takeaway in a moment but right now he’ll enjoy cuddling with Patton for a few moments longer in their new home.
Virgil is nervous about meeting his soulmate. There are so many expectations for soulmates. They’re supposed to find each other attractive at first sight, and date immediately and be in love. But what if that doesn’t happen. What if for one reason or another it doesn’t work out. There’s so much pressure and expectation around soulmates.
Roman has spent his whole life dreaming of a soulmate to sweep off their feet, to be the prince to their princess/prince/royal. He’s grown up watching and falling in love with other people falling in love. All his favourite movies are about falling in love with your soulmate. Roman expects to like his soulmate as soon as he sees them.
He does not however, expect Virgil, loner, emo and anxious.
But that’s ok, he can still sweep him off his feet. Just because they have a rough start doesn’t mean it won’t have a sweet ending.
Except it doesn’t work. They clash, Roman tries to do something romantic and Virgil is embarrassed. Virgil attempts to take Roman on a date but it’s not exactly what Roman wants. They both want different things and it doesn’t seem to be working out.
But they are soulmates, maybe if they just persevere they will grow into it.
They don’t.
It just keeps getting worse, they attempt compromise but it just leaves negative feelings pushed down. Feelings that suddenly push up in bursts of anger until they end up arguing everytime they see each other.
Eventually they can’t anymore and break it off. They failed at life, they failed at being soulmates, something so important in their society.
The people around them try to push them back together, they should love each other through thick and thin, they shouldn’t break up because of a rough patch.
Roman moves away, he can’t handle it anymore. He doesn’t understand why they’re soulmates, sure they have common ground but they want very different things from a relationship. Everything about society that he thought he knew he starts to question.
Virgil is left with a feeling of guilt and failure, his fears had come true and soulmates were a bunch of lies. He just didn’t get it.
The students spread rumors about Virgil pushing his soulmate away. The people around him ignore him unless it is to utter an insult. Soulmates are the most important thing in the world and Virgil had lost his.
Roman on the other hand gets a fresh start at a new school. He meets Patton, wonderful and bubbly Patton. They become best friends easily, they just seem to fit together. They both have the same energy level, they have similar interests and similar sense of humour. Every moment with Patton is fun.
Roman wishes shamefully that Patton were his soulmate which is wrong and something he should never think, he has a soulmate and he failed.
Then Roman meets Patton’s soulmate, Emile. Patton and Emile are in a QPR, there is no romance. Roman is confused yet intrigued at the same time he has some internal prejudice from the pressure of society for soulmates to be romantic. He has so many questions but luckily Patton and Emile are patient and understanding. They help Roman unlearn everything he thought about soulmates and himself.
And then he makes an important discovery.
He’s aromantic.
He wants to be wooed and to woo but he wants to do it in a non romantic sense. He feels more complete than he ever did when he was dating Virgil.
But he can’t help but rethink the situation, perhaps he and Virgil could’ve been friends?
Meanwhile, Virgil still doesn’t really know what to think of soulmates, all he knows is that he failed. But then he stumbles across a tumblr post about how society is stupid for teaching kids that soulmates are always and only romantic and about aromantic people and such. This leads him down a rabbit hole of searching up a bunch of stuff and he realises that he didn’t fail, society failed him, even though it’s hard to believe sometimes. He cries that night.
Later, he finds other people who were in failed soulmate relationships online. He meets Elliott, a wonderful enby who’d got stuck with a boyfriend who was a bit of an arse. It was so freeing for Virgil to be able to talk to someone who got it, who understood how it felt to want the relationship to work, to trying to force it to even though they just ended up being hurt. To feel the weight of societal pressure to conform.
They both also had anxiety and similar interests and their friendship was something that helped Virgil through the tough years of highschool.
The relationship Roman, Patton and Emile have grows. They are best friends, maybe even something a little different then friends and not in a bad way.
Patton and Emile both want Roman to join their relationship but they understand that perhaps he won’t feel the same but they sure as heck are going to tell him.
So they do and Roman is surprised, excited, worried and confused. They’re not soulmates is all Roman can think at first but when he thinks about being more intimate with them and having that platonic wooing and just Patton and Emile in general he lets himself forget that and focus on the excitement and happiness of having a new relationship with people he likes.
So off to university Roman goes with his new queerplatonic partners. They room together.
Roman feels happy in this queerplatonic relationship. He gets to woo and be wooed by these two who want to have the same things out of a relationship. To have cuddles, and binge watch cartoons and go on lovely platonic dates to a park or a cafe or anywhere really. And Roman feels good.
When he told his parents it hadn’t gone down well and they had blamed his brother as if he had anything to do woth the situation. Roman had left after that and not gone back. The three had faced stuff like that at school and probably would continue to face it forever.
But it was worth as long as they were together.
Roman is so happy and ready for anything.
Except for seeing Virgil in his creative writing class.
They both keep looking at each other throughout the class and looking away when the other looks and internally freaking out. They both avoid eachother.
Roman tells his partners and talks it out with them. He feels better about it afterwards and feels ready to talk to Virgil. To apologise, to attempt a friendship, to tell him that they needn’t be in a romantic relationship. He wants so bad for it to go well, to be friends, they’d had some good times together, and to introduce him to his partners. But he understands that maybe Virgil will not want a connection with Roman at all. The bad times had definitely outweighed the good.
Virgil on the otherhand just wants to hide in his bed forever. But his new friend and roommate Logan won’t let him.
The next time they have creative writing, Roman manages to catch Virgil and they go to a cafe for an awkward then not so awkward talk.
Roman apologises first and explains that he doesn’t want to be in a romantic relationship.
And Virgil is so relieved. He actually smiles. He apologises as well.
Their sucky relationship was a team effort after all.
And after that talking gets easier.
Roman explains how he met Patton and then Emile and how their relationship was different. And then about how he’d struggled to understand but because of Patton and Emile’s kindness they’d stuck at it. How’d he figured out he was aromantic and how they had gotten into a relationship and then he’d told his parents, then cut ties with them when they didn’t react well and here he was now.
Virgil doesn’t have as much to tell but tell he does.
He talks about how the school started hating him and how glad he is that he doesn’t go there anymore. He talks about how supportive his counsellor and his mum have been. He talks about stumbling across the tumblr post that changed his whole outlook on life. And how he found other people in failed soulmate relationships that made him feel better. He talks about his new online friend Elliott, that he met that way. He talks about his room mate Logan, who is actually quite pretty.
After they talk less about the serious stuff, starting with some teasing from Roman about Virgil’s little crush on Logan. They talk about courses and WIPs that their working on and new movies they’ve seen.
They just clicked together in a way they never had before.
