She was born in Ansan, South Korea, but was raised in London, England. She and her family moved to Seoul when she was fourteen years old.
Her English name came from the titular character of Jane Austen’s novel Emma, which was her mother’s favourite novel.
Her individual fandom name is Janie.
Her mother passed away from leukemia when Emma was sixteen years old. She revealed this information in LE SSERAFIM’s documentary, "Make It Look Easy."

Her specialties are songwriting and producing.
Emma is a former SM Entertainment trainee. She was street cast when she was going home after hagwon in 2018.
She was a contestant on Produce 48 and placed 15th in the finals.
She first went viral for her audition, where she successfully sang IU’s Good Day despite only having five months of vocal training. She then went viral for her visuals.
On Produce 48, she received hate and backlash for her poker face and extremely introverted and antisocial personality. She was nicknamed the Villain of PD48. In 2024, it was revealed that she was struggling with her grief after her mother’s death.
Emma has been close with Chaewon ever since they were grouped together during their Produce 48 days. Emma stopped being a trainee in late 2018. In 2020, she became a trainee at Source Music.

In late 2021, Emma was cast as Jin Eunseo in Weak Hero Class 1 despite having less than a year of acting experience. There was a lot of backlash against her, especially from her haters from her Produce 48 era.
Emma auditioned for Weak Hero and fully expected not to get the part; she only auditioned to gain more experience. To her surprise, she got it. She reprised her role as Jin Eunseo in Class 2 and 3.
On Showterview with Sunmi, during promotions for Weak Hero Class 1, Emma revealed that her costar, Park Jihoon, was her first kiss ever, and that she had no dating experience.
In early 2024, Emma acted in the drama Mom, I’m Sorry as the lead role Yeon Geum-ok, a fifty-year-old mother who magically reverted back to her twenty-year-old self after her son Gong Hyochan (played by Choi Hyunwook) made a deal.
On February 14, 2025, Emma released her first single Love Wins All which achieved a PAK on the Korean music charts. She acted in the MV alongside Park Jihoon, her co-star in Weak Hero.
In June 2027, Emma released her first English EP titled SUGAR with the titular track Espresso which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In October 2027, Dispatch released photos of Emma and Park Jihoon in an intimate embrace on Jeju. The next day, HYBE Labels and YY Entertainment confirmed their relationship and that the couple have been dating since June 2024.
In November 2027, Emma starred in the 18+ historical drama Red Queen alongside Park Jihoon. The drama became a global hit, amassing a following comparable to that of Squid Game.
