I believe Hollyleaf had a disorder like OCD due to her obsessive actions during Long Shadows and Sunrise involving her brutal punishments with her birth and Ashfur. I believe breaking the warrior code was seen as breaking the imperfect, if you will. Once she realized her own blood was “dirtied” as well she just had a full on mental breakdown for a bit. 

Also might I add the religion i believe is representing Starclan (known as Ancestral Worship) has a strict belief that there is only one set of parents, which might explain why everyone lost there buns over Leaf and Squirrel and why the three had such a hard time getting use to having two sets of parents, also including the warrior code’s standards. 

it doesn't excuse all of the three’s actions but it might explain it some.
