Caloplaca cinnabarina
There are more than 500 species of Caloplaca lichen described thus far in the world. To put that into perspective for you, there are approximately 174 species of ducks, geese and swans (Anatidae) worldwide. So when I say that the name C. cinnabarina has been grossly misused for Caloplaca ID, I think you can understand both the scope of the error, as well as how impossible it is to know and tell the difference between all the species of Caloplaca and give lichen IDers a break. I even deleted a picture I was gonna use for this post from a prominent lichenologist because the picture just didn't really match the description I was seeing. No shade because this shit is hard! C. cinnabarina has an areolate (tile-like) thallus made up of angular areoles (tile-like subsections) and short marginal lobes (only in larger, older specimens) growing in rounded patches on siliceous rock. It has a distinctly deep orange to red orange thallus, and immersed apothecia with darker orange discs.

This species is perhaps one of if not the most widespread cyanolichen in the United States, Common in Appalachia and less common outside of it unless you find yourself in some very clean and humid woodlands.
Bottoms Up or Nephroma helveticum is a species that produces its apothecia on the lower surface of it's lobe tips making it damn near impossible to confuse it for other cyanolichens though it's genus has similar looking species this is a key indicator.
it can be found quite literally everywhere there is decent humidity and clean air at all elevations on all surfaces(mainly branches). Though it is said that it forms a non apothecia version on sandstone and noncalcium rich rocks where it is also found less commonly.
Lobaria pulmonaria
Not only is it known for it having 3 organisms in it's interface unlike most with just a photobiont and mycobiont. This species is a humidity and air quality indicator associated with pureness you can only find in strictly core untouched vast woodlands and temperate rain forest.
Known as the Crown Jewel of America and Tree Lungwort colloquially it harbers a special place in most lichen lovers hearts.
You can find it in good habitat on both east and west coasts with a large blip in the arbuckle mountains on the border of Oklahoma and Arkansas with it's smallest most isolated population in the middle (dead center) of Colorado somewhere.
Low and middle elevations on hardwood bark surfaces (corticulous )

Rec climbs are always a conversation starter and a good way to network and practice movement and access,
Organized this rec climb at Bortz family nature preserve, on Cardinal land trust land at the confluence of Little Miami and Ohio rivers.
Bortz is a riparian edge woodland and has a flat depression area home to many flood plain species associated with rich calcareous soils of the Ohio River Valley. It's home to an active Bald Eagles nest with a camera and also home to many other migratory birds. If you like tiger beetles there are hairy collard tiger beetle and gravel tiger beetle as well as the 6 spotted emerald tiger beetle. Many Ludwigia species call it home as well as a spot to see dwarf bull rush and many moths late august.
Adjacent is a broken bar island, Magree marsh, and a tall tree oldgrowth pocket of original ORV woodland known as California woods nature preserve.
If you are interested in unusual forbes there are smooth spermacox and riparian Virginia mallow along the banks as well as nodding biennial rattlesnake lettuce to name a few cool species.
Fresh water mussel hot spot as well.
The pictures above are as follows:
Bald eagles nest near rec climbing spot.
My friend Simon climbing a 90 foot cottonwood trying out the new ISC reflex( ISC wales version of a midline petzel zigzag.)
My friend Danny Bauer who was in town briefly from San Fransisco California.

My friend Erin from Madison
Group of friends as shot from a sycamore with a heavy lead on a rotten trunk and no top section. You can also see I climb redundant ( 2 rings 2 bridge. ) I do this to not only increase surface and create wide bend radias which decreases rope ware on the bridge but also prevents single catastrophic failure though unlikely is possible.
Danny Bauer in the silvermaple I swung out of (around 100 ft tall)
Danny taking multiple shots of me going out to the tips on this sycamore, you can see how heavy the lateral is and how rotten the trunk is, the goal is to stay leaned into my harness and remain lite, rope angle is everything so passing a system around upright sun scaffolds is nice and can be done by use of on rope redirects which can be seen in the bottom picture.
The group was 15 of us from multiple companies( Madison, Davey, SB, Shawnee, Lester Tree Health Professionals, TCI, and Simple Thanks.)
In some aspects of climbing gear i have little to report ,Dmm bcc said they couldn't work with usa terrifs same with maple leaf ropes xre ls . Potentially they are trying to get something worked out for next year.
What is important is forming ecological stewardship at home, community food sources, and fighting the corresponding corruption where you can if you live in the USA. Don't let your blue collar brothers be taken by the ice gostoppo and nazis of the modern era. Don't let trans people be functionally removed from society by forcing them out of jobs. Don't let your national parks and public lands become symbols of privatization and death, don't let BR. Win.
May your countries be safe, under no influences of Christianity zionism and Israeli zionism. If Christianity and Jewish beliefs can liberate themselves from genocidal beliefs may yall make it happen. May food and aid get to Palestinians and Ukrainians. People associated with dei get their jobs back and may dei hires be proven as the falsehood it is and acknowledge these people's skills. Love yall , I made a new Instagram after being banned cedarbarren.
Still thinking about this every day and you should too.
Edit and update:
Ok I went to bnb river boats this year with my friend Spencer and had a blast, The cool features were tents not just boats, OhioRiverFoundation, Boat Lab, Stone Lab Lake Erie, USEPACINCINNATI, and MillCreekAlliance were there as well as another educational freshwater research tent that had a "Catch Of The Day tank. Truly incredibly magnificent.
