“So the new movies are all colours an’ the old ones are black an’ white,” attention focussed on the TV and Lil Malbuddy’s adventure to Altissia to visit Leviathan, Asha spared Tredd only the briefest of glances, “Does that mean that /everything/ was black an’ white back then?”

He smiled at her, even though her attention was mostly focused on the television. “No, ‘course not.   I don’t know all the details, but back when they first started bein’ able to record motion, they only figured out how to do it in black and white.  Some of the oldest films do have some colour, but Soni said that’s ‘cause they added the colour later, by hand.”

Asha!

Aideen actually grinned and jumped down from the truck bed, running to her new friend. She thought Asha was her friend? Asha was very nice and talked so much and had shared her crayons and her flyers with Aideen. That was what friends did, right?

Da had found crayons for her, just for her, so she could colour with Asha again, and they could share together. She waved at the other girl happily.

Little hand closing around the tiny tooth she held in her palm, Asha blinked up at Dave —tooth fairy?  Mama and daddy hadn’t ever mentioned anything like a tooth fairy.  And why would she need to put it under her pillow … couldn’t she just hand the tooth over whenever the fairy showed up?  Dark eyes glued to her fist for a second, she made to bury her hands into the pockets of her jackets before smiling up at Dave once more.

“What’s the tooth fairy, uncle Dave?  Mama an’ daddy ain’t ever mentioned a tooth fairy before!”

“They ain’t mentioned the tooth fair ‘fore?” Putting down the pen, he pulled his attention away from the map he’d been plotting and crouched down to Asha’s level. There was work to be done, yes, but kids had to have their childhoods too. “Y’know I bet it must be somethin’ yer mama an’ papa don’t know about.”

He reached out and closed her little hand around the baby tooth, smiling as he glanced around. “Y’gotta put that under yer pillow and the tooth fairy’ll come by an’ leave ya a surprise. But only if yer a good girl and go t’sleep. She don’t appear if ya try to stay awake to see her, trust me darlin’ I’ve tried.”

“So, you must be our newest and brightest mind, eager to learn. Do you have a name?” Sania asked of the young girl who had been deposited there with her mother in tow. It wasn’t a profession she’d ever seen herself doing, but in the World of Ruin, everyone needed something to get by. For her, being schoolteacher to the newest generations had been something that had simply fallen on her. And she took to it with aplomb alongside her other scientific duties. It took her mind off of things, anyhow. 

The schoolhouse itself was a gutted mobile home they’d found out somewhere in Leide. Able to comfortably house 12, the innards had been repurposed and outfitted with the bare essentials like a tap, its bathroom, and several desks and a chalkboard that had come from gods knew where. Asha wasn’t alone, naturally. A few new faces had popped up over the years, so she was in good company

On rainy days, they sat inside and away from the porch—no colouring today, Asha had another idea. With Leviathan and Carbuncle set off to the side, she tipped the contents of the box out onto the coffee table; a jigsaw. “We gotta turn all the bits over so we can see ‘em,” lid placed flat on the floor between them so they could see the picture, she started turning the pieces picture side up, “An’ /then/ we gotta find all the edge bits so we can build it like a frame.”

She couldn’t see Da from inside.

But Da had promised she’d be safe with Asha, and so had Miss Sara -- and it did sometimes get boring, watching them. And hot. Really, really hot sometimes. So today she had followed Asha inside, her eyes widening as the other gilr upended a box of paper pieces onto a table.

Almost hesitant, she started turning pieces over like Asha told her, smiling tentatively.

“I wasn’t crying.”

Sitting down on the step of his mama’s house, Dave gave little Asha’s back a soft pat and he offered a small smile.

He didn’t know why the little’un was upset, but if there was one thing he didn’t want her doing, it was hiding the fact.

“Asha, it’s alright to cry darlin’. Everyone has to do it some times.”
