#25. “I’m scared.”
Your heart was beating out of your chest, pushing blood out of a deep cut along your cheekbone. Whitehill soldiers were everywhere. Your only escape was through the stupid bloody gate.
“The gate will fall without one of us holding it!” Rodrik’s voice was tight with strain. He had only recently gotten back on his feet since his injuries but he was still fighting the crank with all his strength. “One of us has to stay!”
“Bullshit!” you heard yourself shout as a crossbow bolt whipped past your ear. Another inch to the left and it would have imbedded itself in your brain instead of a wooden support beam.
You could hear Beshka screaming for the both of you. She had only come to Westeros for you and him.
“Go Rodrik, [f/n], I know what I’m doing!” Asher insisted, his gaze pleading with you.
“Iron from ice, brother,” Rodrik recited as your heart dropped.
“Iron from ice,” Asher repeated.
“No, I’m not leaving you!” you exclaimed. But Rodrik had already grabbed ahold of you, practically dragging you away from the crank towards the gate. You were yelling, struggling, desperate not to leave Asher behind. It wasn’t fair. He had only just come home.
Suddenly, despite your efforts, you found yourself on the opposite side of the gate. It clanged shut and Asher was there, shouting at you. “Go!”
You hook your fingers into the gate, “Asher, please, don’t do this.” But it was already done and you both knew it. There were tears in your eyes and you could taste blood on your lips from the cut on your cheek. “You’re my family.”
“Stay by my brother’s side. He’s your family now,” Asher practically begged, and you could see in his eyes that doing this hurt him.
You reached for him, desperation clawing at your throat, “I’m scared. I don’t know how to do this without you. I don’t know if I can do this without you.”
His hand clasped yours for the briefest moment, squeezing your fingers, lending you his strength even though you knew he needed it more. “You can. Now go!”
