The Ash Holder
A friend of mine has an ash holder necklace. Her mom passed away about four years ago, some of her mom's ashes are in it. She hardly ever takes it off. This past weekend she came to the mall with me and another friend. She saw a necklace she loved along with some clothes at Forever 21 and tried them all on in the fitting room. She decided to wear the necklace she bought along with a new hoodie, and to take her mom's ash necklace off because it didn't match. After visiting other stores, getting mani-pedis, and being 3/4 of the way home from the mall that's 45 minutes away from our town, she realized she left her mom's ash necklace. I have never seen her so pale and distraught. She was frantically rummaging through all of her pockets, shopping bags, and in between the seats of my car. Watching her become so frantic made my heart drop. I drove us back so she could go inside and look. On the drive back she called the store. They said they would look around and they haven't had anyone turn anything in. She thanked them and hung up with tears in her eyes. My heart never hurt so bad for anyone in my life. She was afraid someone thought it was a locket and stole it. My faith in humanity was becoming paper thin at this point as I saw my friend who is not very emotional fight back tears. When we got back to the mall she storms out of my car as if it were up in flames. My other friend and I pray to a God we aren't even sure we believe in that our sweet friend finds her mom's necklace. After an agonizing wait that felt like a thousand years, she returns. Tears of joy fall down her face as she explains that someone had turned it in, thinking someone was missing the necklace very very much. My faith in humanity sky rocketed as I heard the fantastic news. I always hear phenomenal stories of people doing such amazing deeds. This may not seem like much, but the person who turned in her necklace has such a heart of gold. Even though it isn't much, it could've destroyed my friend if it were stolen. I cannot express how much I want to thank this person for having such a kind and pure heart. They could've easily stolen it out of the dressing room, or taken it and pawned it thinking it was a locket, or a silver heart necklace, but they didn't. This small act of kindness not only restored my faith in mankind, but moved my friend's aching heart to tears of pure joy, and stilled the butterflies in her stomach. Sorry for rambling but this is a story I'll carry with me and cherish forever. My faith in humanity has been restored.
