Back at it again for @999week with some Junpei + some thoughts on him :3 He's just a little dude and I have many thoughts on him, but it's too late at night to write something coherent xD.

Hands down, Junpei is one of the most interesting characters in 999 and the Zero escape series as a whole. 999 spoilers ahead. He's a puppet loosely strung - Akane's vessel in her attempt to save herself. And one of the interesting things about this is that he, by the context of 999's epilogue and references in ZTD, does not seem to mind this. Despite everything he went through, if Akane was safe at the end and with him again, it's worth it. Minor ZTD spoilers ahead, but there is no timeline where he wouldn't die for Akane (and later Carlos, too). He's only ever angry because he was left behind. Really, the events after 999 make his character one of the most tragic in the games. Anyways, Junpei nation rise up.

I meant to do a quick study of a photo for @999week, but instead this turned into a Clover plus an elaboration of my thoughts of Clover and Junpei's friendship! It's a bit rushed but alas. Click on the image for a better view!

Well I did mention it in a post, so here is the essay.

One severely underrated thing about ZE is Clover and Junpei's friendship, which in fanworks often seems to be outshadowed in favour of other friendships.

999 and VLR spoilers ahead.

First and foremost, it's their budding friendship that stopped Clover from going down the axe pathway in the true end. Without Junpei's (bad) attempts at comfort, Clover would have gone off the deep end. Moreover, even in the axe end, even after he discovers Clover killed Snake, June, and Seven, Junpei still reaches out to her, indicating a level of trust (that is soon betrayed).

However, their friendship truly shines in VLR. We learn that Clover initially turns down a job at SOIS and only reconsiders once Seven tells her Junpei is missing, thus indicating a deep bond between them two as Clover is willing to put herself back in the line of fire to save him. To a similar extent, we see Tenmyouji implicitly trust Clover in the AB games and always ally with her even if she fully intends to betray him. Even after so long Tenmyouji is willing to put his faith in her. This extends to Quark, as Tenmyouji remarks that once Quark has been sedated, he trusts Clover to take care of him out of everyone.

Another presentation of this mutual trust is that once Clover finds out who Tenmyouji is, she abandons all plans with Alice in getting out first and instead always allies with him, not once betraying him.

Anyways.
