I think the big reason why they had to use a performer with sight is the cost of insurance coupled with safety. Insurance policies for performers in action movies/television series costs a TON of money. It would have been a huge unknown as to whether or not it would have been done successfully without the performer getting severely injured. (Continued)
(Continued) The risk assessment for the policy would have jacked up the price. I’d love to see more representation, but in this case safety and insurance would have been major factors. I do hope that maybe they bring other characters in the show with disabilities that are actually played by people with them. It would be fantastic.
[Sorry, internet on my end was acting weird. Couldn’t send this last bit.] If the insurance company and safety standards people thought it was too dangerous they could have shut the entire production down until their qualifications where met.
This would be in response to my post here: http://out-there-on-the-maroon.tumblr.com/post/127426537870/daredevilAnd here: http://out-there-on-the-maroon.tumblr.com/post/128367470465/disturbing-trend
I gotta call bullshit on this. I am aware that insurance policies on actors cost a ton of money. (Hello, went to school for this.) It’s also why famous actors are required to use stunt doubles whenever possible, because an actor not only makes money on the specific project they’re working on, but lots of projects down the line - basically, think of all the movie deals big name actors book years in advance, that’s money and employment for thousands of people involved in the movie making process, if they get killed or seriously injured, that’s money and jobs lost in the future. An actor matters more than just themselves, they represent employment for thousands of people down the line.
Also actors who are considered an investment risk, for past bad behavior on sets, violent arguments, drug problems, etc., require extra insurance to get a movie made. If you want to make a movie with a “risky” actor, the studio has to take out a special (and expensive) insurance to promise that if they can’t finish, that independent company will take the film and finish it and claim all profits for themselves. Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t touchable of years because he was considered too much of a risk on-set and his insurance was too expensive.
Now, I understand in the case of the movie Red Dragon because Reba had to pet a live tiger on camera, and by law that tiger could not be sedated. That’s the rules nowadays, there were too many cases of animals accidentally being killed with improper sedation techniques, so all large animals onscreen nowadays are completely awake. I can’t imagine any insurance agency allowing a real blind woman to be in the room with a live tiger that could have at any moment lunged. Look at the special features if you wanna have an anxiety attack sometime, btw, the tiger sits up suddenly a few times and everyone flinches away, including Ralph Fiennes, except for Emily Watson, who was trying to stay in-character. But in the tv show? That tiger is fake. A beautiful fake, but a fake. No danger there. All the actress had to do was walk around rooms, at one point crawl down a hallway, and have a simulated sex scene where basically she straddled Richard Armitage and they humped for a few minutes. She stood in rooms, walked through rooms, and got in and out of a van. She was not required to enact any elaborate stunts or be in dangerous situations. The insurance for her would have been low, had they used a real blind actress.
In Penny Dreadful, the blind character was required to stand in rooms, pick up small props, walk down a hallway, and at one point close a door. She was not required to enact any elaborate stunts or be in dangerous situations. The insurance for her would have been low, had they used a real blind actress.
Now, for Daredevil, as the lead actor, required to do a lot more than the previously mentioned characters, insurance would have been higher. However, by using an unknown blind actor (as the case would have been) compared to more expensive and famous Charlie Cox, the cost could have been offset in that regard. They could (and would) have paid him less than Charlie Cox, by nature of this hypothetic blind actor not being a famous actor already compared to the more well-known Charlie Cox (this is a tactic Marvel likes to use a lot, look at the Marvel movies, a lot of their leads did not begin as stars, they began as much smaller time actors who then became mega stars via their Marvel roles.) Any insurance concerns would have been met with “we’ll use a sighted stunt double for all of these scenes, and a body-double for this hit, and this scene, etc.” I can think of a dozen different ways to use body doubles and camera tricks and lighting to disguise where the actor slipped out and the stunt-double stepped in. Hell this is stuff people already do to switch out actors and their stunt doubles, it just would have been a bit more frequent with Daredevil. Helps that in almost all of his action scenes HE IS WEARING A FACE MASK. Instant “here goes the stunt double” switchover.
I grant that it would have been more expensive to construct sets and line up shots with a blind actor. However, working outside of the network tv structure, which is much more rushed, and working with the more freeing Netflix format, and also using the BUCKETS OF MARVEL MONEY, that would have been possible. I think with a rushed network tv schedule it would have been deemed too costly and time-consuming to accommodate a blind actor in the lead role. But working to make a Netflix show, I think that would have been completely possible.
If they had cared, if they had even bothered to try, they could have done it. They had the backing of one of the most profitable media conglomerates at the time, they had a more flexible shooting schedule than the rigid structure of network tv filming, they were going to broadcast on a platform that welcomes “riskier” storytelling and casting compared to the competitive network market.
They did not. And I call bullshit that casting a blind actor for Daredevil would have been impossible or too expensive. It would have been possible. They just didn’t even try.
(Once again, this is not a slam against any of the actors who were cast, I think they did fantastic jobs, for the ladies I had to actually check to see if they were blind in real life or not because they were on point. Charlie Cox was brilliant. But these are roles that could have been given to blind actors, and they weren’t.)
ashleyls17 reblogged your post:That promo pic of Ragnar and Athelstan kneeling? I...
Well in last weeks episode Ragnar did say he hoped that the Christian God and the Gods of his faith could be friends....
I know! That's why all of a sudden it hit me like a ton of bricks, "Duh! He's converting or something in that scene."

Well, I have my sister, but other than her, probably Sandra.

I'm being serious. I love shipping platonic, romantic, and sexy times pairings.
Okay. Good for you? But it's really not necessary to use offensive terms to ship things(and just because something isn't offensive to you, doesn't mean it's not offensive). And it's SUPER not necessary to reply to my post about how I find it offensive just to say that you don't care if it hurts me and you're going to do it anyways.

Brotp relationships are awesome! I don't care who I offend. BORTP-ER FOR LIFE! :-)
Are you being serious? Or is this sarcasm?
Terracotta Army War Cry
Gather the shards of the memories of those you lost as well as the words and works of those who inspire you. Break them down into your guardians. Take and build your own Terracotta Army out of them. Use them as your shields and swards. Take guidance from your battlefield advisers.
Things fray and fade. Lives and dreams are not always realized. You are still here. You are still fighting. Use their epitaphs as your war cry.
Keep moving forward. Doesn't matter how fast. Just keep moving.
