Hi! Do you have any tips and tricks for pro designs? I just bought it. I think that I'm pretty good at it, but I definitely could be better.
I’m learning a LOT about this new design editor, for sure! It’s so so different than designing in ACNL.
A few tips that I’ve learned!
Less is more! Because of the smoothing feature, you need to do WAY less shading/blending to make things look good! I’ve found the less shades I use, the better. I normally do a “main” shade, a “shadow”, and a “highlight”.
Color theory helps! When choosing your shadow and highlight shades, don’t just change the “vividness” or the “brightness”, changing the hue up or down a click can help it look more real!
If you want sharp edges (instead of things turning all rounded and smoothed) for things like plaid and gingham, the CLOSER the colors are together, the better! A lot of times I’ll watch the model preview of the design as I click through hues/vividness/brightness variations trying to get the pixels to become square again! Test it and you’ll see what I mean.
Use all the tools! Take a reallllly close look at all the pro design app offers! Things like ZR will let you “mirror” as you draw, or pressing L+R will use the eyedropper to pick up whatever color your cursor is over! Saves a lot of time instead of clicking L or R to cycle through your palette colors.
