Do you skip tutorials as fast as you can?

depends on the game. the thing about tutorials is that they're useful to a point, and some are better than others. assuming this is not a game I've played before, tutorials can actually super frustrate me because they're too directed. the sort of ones that force you to click on specific items, level specific stuff, grab random quests, etc, to teach you a system—without letting you actually go through the options available. and that doesn't teach me anything except the buttons to click yes, which I. can find on my own thank you. please move your giant cursor and greyed out text so I can read the description of whatever the fuck this is.

I grew up in a era of very minimal tutorials, so I am the sort of person who likes to learn a game by methodically going through and reading all the buttons and options in the menu etc. this isn't to say tutorials aren't helpful—the good ones give you simple quests to focus on while starting out, especially in open world games, and sometimes they're less a tutorial than they are a lower stakes version of the game to get you familiarized with the gameplay, which is useful. like a practice round or some such.

anyway. that all being said yes I usually try to get past the tutorial asap so I can do my own thing, even if I don't mind it that much.

I don't think I can answer that question. so many games have wildly different and equally astounding art styles I can't like. compare them? also my memory is shitty as fuck so I can only visualize the last few games I played.

like rn I'd say fields of mystria due to the way they absolutely nailed the nostalgic old jrpg style with their sprites. but that's bc I literally just played it. I haven't played FFXIV in years, and I know theyv'e done further updates, but I was still around for the first one and I kept taking random screenshots of sunsets and the like bc the new lighting was so beautiful. idk if I'd say it has the best overall art style but the images really stuck in my head. I also gotta shout out infinity nikki. I don't think I'll go back to playing it but she had some extremely good looks.

overall my preference is for games with art that is usually more cartoonish or stylized. I'm not as into hyperrealism. I also like bright solid colors, and the ability to easily distinguish myself and the surroundings. so games where they're too pixelated or lots of things are happening at once visually can also be an issue, or stuff where it's just. dark and bland. but that's just my personal onion. I'd love to hear other people's recs tho!!!

stardew valley. it's the passion project of one singular man, who has always been receptive and attentive to the community. he's extremely mod friendly, even coding in things to the base game to help mods run better. and stardew itself is a wonderful game, which he's constantly trying to make it better. I just have a lot of respect for concernedape and his impact.

I know a lot of the criticisms, some of which are valid and I understand them, but there's some that are just "it's because he's literally just one guy" and there's some that are "that's more of a genre critism". (he did not invent the genre. btw. farming sims have been a thing forever. do none of you remember farmville.) I personally use a lot of mods to change or add content I find lacking, so like. I'm not unaware. but I'll never get super up in arms about it bc the base game is great and he's, again, literally just one guy.

also you can put hats on cats now so it's a perfect game no notes

depends on the game. some games run better on console since I don't have a very robust computer, but other games are just quintessentially computer games. i cannot imagine trying to play FFXIV with a controller and I am in awe of those who do.

these days however I will say I love the portability of both the switch and the steamdeck. the steamdeck especially is interesting bc that's computer games on a console. some of them work out fine! some of them. Do Not. lmao.

so overall I lean console but I'm never going to disparage computer games, especially games where a keyboard is integral.

this is going to be Me Specific obviously but like.

I think farming sims (stardew valley) and the like are inherently replayable, personally, but if you're not into aiming for roughly the same goals, I think Hades and Hades 2 have inherent replay value not just for story reasons but because each run is unique. it's arguably made to be replayed (in that the runs are made to be multiple and you're supposed to die).

BUT. if we aren't talking about open world-esque games with that sort of gameplay. the factual answer is visual novels. gotta do all the routes babeyyy
