This was their first serious fight.
After 2 years together, Lexi finally moved in with Fezco. Into the house where they shared their deepest thoughts and most intimate moments. The house he grew up in, the house he created with the circumstances he had, the house where he watched both of the people he loved unconditionally die in.
Grief wasn't always apparent.
The first weeks were the walls built around him that she patiently chipped at to break down. The next couple of months were the late nights spent in his bedroom, losing his thoughts in her.
Now she realized his grief stood still like a hummingbird. It was the memories and reminders of the people he loved sprinkled throughout the house.
It was Ashtray's computer desk that was still scattered with random wrappers and papers and his grandma's bedside table still full of her medication. It was the way he kept his brother's favourite cereal in the cupboard even though the expiry date was last year.
The frustration was apparent in his eyes when she started shuffling things around. The old clothes were being put into boxes, the bedsheets were finally being made, and the medication getting thrown out. She was also getting impatient with his silent brooding.
One thing led to another today. The snippy tones turned into yelling, and the yelling turned into the door slamming.
Here Lexi was, alone in the house she thought was a new beginning. One where there was no more yelling. No more tears. No one leaving. No more feeling alone.
Hearing the door open quietly and footsteps shuffle in a hurry, she felt his hands slide around her waist and his long arms embrace her from behind. His nose in her hair breathing in deeply, his lips reaching out to the spot behind her neck he knew she loved.
"I'm sorry, ma. Shouldn't have done that. You're right."
They weren't perfect. They still both had a lot to work through, but they also knew they had full control of the lives they wanted to build.
They made the rules now.
