There are different information that we can get from the internet. But we should remember that not everything that we get from there is verified. That is why we should remember to ask the experts about it or you can research more. It can help in lessening any complications that might happen!

a little rant on tumblr fact checking

Only here for a moment until tonight hopefully, but I took a brief pause from MHG and scrolled over the dash on my personal and I swear if I have to see one more Tumblr fanfiction post about science I’m going to throw hands. Here only two examples of posts I’ve seen in the last half-hour.

Southern accents being actually a slowed-down English accent? Not a single proof beyond a Youtube video that isn’t supported by a single linguistic source. I’m not an expert on English, but as someone who did a lot on (historical) linguistics at university, I can assure you that accents and dialects don’t work that way. 

The ninth planet named Persephone? I know Tumblr LOVES Hades and Persephone but beyond a Change petition and some people claiming the name has been proposed, there are no sources on this. 

Why does nobody bother to check it? OR JUST GOOGLE IT AND SEE HOW OFTEN THIS RESULT POPS UP? It’s not even a debate in science where scholars are arguing, with 50% saying this and 50% saying that, it’s literally not proven by ANY scientist, not even fringe movements. Checking this took me 5 minutes.

If you reblog posts like that without checking if it’s true but only because it sounds good, you’re part of the problem. We have so much information at our fingertips, and yet we choose ignorance because it fits our world-view. Check your sources.
