Question from a learning pixel artist; what program do you use and how do you use shading to create textures so well? Thanks in advance
ahh congrats on starting pixel art! i hope you're having a lot of fun with it! it's one of my favorite mediums! it really pushes you to consider various limitations and those constraints can result in really innovative and creative art solutions.
Regarding the programs that I use, I use FireAlpaca for rendering (I sketch in pixels from start-to-finish), Aseprite for animation, and PyxelEdit for tile work! I go a bit more into detail in this ask here: https://www.tumblr.com/moawling/701841953932951552/hi-there-welcome-to-tumblr-your-food-snails-are?source=share
For me, pixel art is so much about optical trickery, especially when you're working with smaller resolutions (working bigger uses different techniques). Pulling off textures requires knowing when to simplify and exaggerate certain forms. For example:
Looking at the rice, you can see that I didn't render every single grain of rice! I used my understanding of lighting to judge where to draw rice grains and where the omit the texture. If you study photographs with intense lighting, you can see how very dark and very light areas get "washed out".
With textures, especially with pixel art, sometimes less is more! As an artist, all you have to do is provide just enough visual context to provide the viewer with an understanding of the material. ThEn let THEIR imaginations do the rest of the work!
Hope this was helpful! BEST OF LUCK to u and ur pixels journey!
