Toby made sure to wash his hands thoroughly with soap and water, drying them after and throwing the paper towel away neatly. He returned to the counter next to Kyung and listened to her explain the key ingredient to him, his eyes lit up in approval as she described the taste.
“That sounds delicious.” He studied the yom in his hands and gave it a curious sniff as he continued to listen and made a note of all the steps. “Always cook before eating… boil and mash into a paste… okay! So next we make the batter?”
When Toby signaled that he was ready for the next step, Kyung nodded affirmatively before her arms got to work on bringing over the bowls of ingredients and an opened cookbook closer to them. At a first glance, the text within said book would be entirely foreign to the Mudokon. Thankfully, there pictures of what the cake would look like in certain stages of preparation and translated text that Toby could read on the page next to it.
“Correct! But before we do that, there’s an important step that I sometimes forget about...” Kyung pointed out with a chuckle towards her own baking faux pas, releasing the bowls to gesture towards what appeared to be a large oven close by. “Thankfully, I didn’t forget this time− But aside from washing one’s paws, pre-heating the oven is always first on the list!” She stated, then got back on track to starting the batter.
Since it was a baking lesson, Toby was given a mixing bowl, a set of utensils, and ingredients so he could follow along.
“Right then! First, we start by mixing our dry ingredients. In the majority of cake recipes I’ve read, they always mix the dry and wet ingredients separately before combining them,” Kyung instructed, making sure to go at just the right pace for Toby as she walked him through sifting the flour, how to properly measure the baking soda and salt, and how to use a whisk.
