fav non musical part of/scene from bandstand? :)))
the first that comes to mind is when julia says “i don’t need to be rescued” and donny says “what if i do?” i think part of what makes me love it so much is that it’s such an honest and vulnerable thing for donny to say and he says it with such ease. he hasn’t known julia long at all, and this was a time where no one talked about what they went through during the war (people still don’t really talk about it now) so the fact that donny right away can tell her that is huge. it’s a big moment for them as well, i just think it’s a beautiful moment of honesty between the two. it’s definitely one of my favorite scenes in the show.
oh also, and this is without a doubt my favorite non-verbal moment of the show. is after julia gives donny the welcome home poem, he comes on stage again sitting at his piano playing what will become the music, he and the piano are bushed on by soldiers, representing donny’s emotional baggage and ptsd. as the music swells and donny turns her words into a song the guys slowly start to leave and donny becomes more alive, showing us how music is what heals him and allows him to forget the tragedies of what happened and feel truly alive even if it’s just for a moment. this scene made me absolutely bawl the first time i saw it and has stuck with me ever since. i’ve thought about that moment almost every single day since april 2017. it’s utterly beautiful and is exactly what the spirit of the show is
