Was Nero part of VFD? He looks genuinely so clueless, as obsessed as he is with his instrument - whose symbolism never reappears afterwards, unlike most of the main tutors' hobbies. I find book 5 a crucial change in both style and depth for the story as a whole. Maybe you czb tell us more on this? Merry Christmas :-)

As to Nero… I think we can safely say he’s not part of VFD at all. His interactions with Bass and Remora in “The Penultimate Peril” reveal how unaware he is of what’s really going on. We also get one of his letters in the un-Authorized Autobiography which shows he’s being influenced by Eleonora Poe and Geraldine Julienne, who are themselves being manipulated by the “villainous” side of the Schism. He clearly knows as much about VFD as he does about the violin.

That being said, he’s involved in the VFD plot whether he realizes it or not. There’s satisfying evidence that Prufrock Prep used to run a recruitment scheme for VFD and that said scheme is still going on from time to time. The fact we never hear about who the Principal is or what he does is also very suspicious.

That’s why Nero was hired, in my opinion: he provides an innocent facade for the school and evades any kind of question, and yet VFD can’t be traced back to him, since he knows nothing of its secrets. He’s such a terrible vice-principal that no one notices the other irregular events at Prufrock Prep. He wouldn’t ask about VFD even if his pupils were being kidnapped on a regular basis: he’s just that self-absorbed. An idiot, but a useful idiot. You could say VFD is playing him like, er… Like some sort of string instrument ? I don’t know.

I do think the symbolism of Nero reappears afterwards since he’s a clear reference to the (historically inaccurate) image of Emperor Nero playing his lyre as Rome burns. We see plenty of fires later in the series, don’t we?

And yes, “The Austere Academy” is a definite change in tone for the series because that’s where the VFD plot really starts. This is because Daniel Handler had originally signed a contract for four books. He didn’t want to start that very long narrative thread about VFD because he was afraid the series would get cancelled because of bad sales… which would have left him no books to see the VFD plot to its intended end. Once “The Austere Academy” came out, however, he felt confident enough to shake the foundations of the series and introduce a mystery spanning every book.
