♤ It was true that time healed wounds. But he had not expected the wounds of his heart and mind to linger for so long as they did. Now, he was alone. It had been near a month since he had last seen battle, since he last held his spear and shield. Brasidas missed it -- after all, his spear and shield were his everything -- well.
Only one, maybe two people knew what he was doing and why. A month ago, Brasidas had taken a fall, and many thought he had been slain. That was for the best, though. If the Athenians thought Brasidas -- an incredibly influential general -- had been killed, maybe they would lighten their attacks. Or, at least to make them a little more comfortable in their attacks and risky maneuvers. It was always the ego that caused armies to fall.
Now, the only sound he was concentrating on was the birds singing the songs of the gods while they waited for Helios’ chariot to appear. Brasidas was naturally an early riser and had been up for a few hours, enjoying the cooler morning air and watching the dew gather on the grass. Living in the moment was something he hadn’t learned how to do until recently.
His camp was small and was obviously one that was easy to pack up and move when needed. The fire only burned embers now, the wood practically falling to ashes before his eyes.
However, his eyes moved when he heard something beyond the treeline, perhaps on the road. Goosebumps wracked his arms as he watched. It was clearly a person, which worried Brasidas for the briefest moment, but it became seen in their movements that the person wasn’t headed directly towards him. He couldn’t tell if they were simply wandering for the sake of wandering or if they had a destination to reach. Perhaps they were lost?
As the person stepped between a pair of trees, Brasidas realized who it was. His heart leaped into his throat and for a moment, he just stared, unable to move from where he stood on the outskirts of his camp. ‘you’re simply insane! you just miss her!’ He told himself numerous lies, hoping one would ring true.
What would she think if she saw him right then? Would she be angry with him? He silently dreaded the idea of that, but found his body moving towards her slowly. “Kassandra?” It was more of a wheeze than a question, and he wasn’t even certain that she would be able to hear it. Brasidas just had to make sure it was real -- that the gods weren’t cursing his mind and causing him to go insane.

Cups his cheeks and gently presses her forehead against his.
♧ A gentle hand came up for him to place in the crook of her neck. He liked this closeness he could share with her, and there was nobody else he would rather share it with. The smallest smile played at his lips as he closed his eyes, drinking in he moment as best he could.

♧ There was a heartbeat in his ears, and his eyes remained half-lidded as he felt a wave of fatigue overcome him. Calloused hands moved languidly to cover the growing patch of crimson that had appeared on his stomach. The back of his head was warm and sticky - he didn’t know whose blood he was laying in, or if it was his own. He didn’t know whether or not they had been victorious, but he had a sinking feeling that it would be his last battle.
The silence he never felt was broken when he heard a rustling beside him. His best assumption was that it was a soldier here to finish him off and end his suffering. Brasidas didn’t need to turn his head to look. He just let his eyes wander up to the cloudless sky as he awaited his end. He was ready to die a Spartan.
The stab of a spear never came, but the sun was blocked by someone’s face. He did what he could to focus his vision, squinting his eyes with what little energy he had left. Brasidas recognized that face. The amber eyes, the scar on her lips; it was a comforting sight - as comfortable as it could be.
Brasidas tried to lift his head, but it fell back to the bloody ground, and a wince came to his typically relaxed face. ❝Hades is claiming me.❞ His hands fell away from the wound. Brasidas’ words were more of a choke as red lined his lips, threatening to spill out.
“I don’t want to disappoint you”
I don’t want to sentence starters – ACCEPTING!!
♧ Would it be enough if he told her ‘you won’t’? No, it wouldn’t. But he knew Kassandra, and he knew that there was so little she could do that would disappoint him.❝No, now hang on,❞ he began, ❝Since I met you, all you’ve ever done is impress me, you know. I do not think I have once been disappointed by you.❞
Brasidas shook his head, pressing a firm hand to his chest. Why was she so concerned about this now? ❝I’ve never seen this behavior from you… Is everything alright, Kassandra?❞ He brought himself a few inches closer so that if she did have something on her mind, she wouldn’t end up having to accidentally announce it to the world.
