In 2015, Russia took away the rights of asexual people to hold driver’s licenses. This ties into pathologization of asexual identities. Also in Russia, there are laws against “propaganda causing minors to form non-traditional sexual predispositions” which has led to ace-inclusive youth sites being shut down.
Many asexuals - and aromantics too - on the basis of their orientations struggle to access legal recognition of their relationships. This impacts immigration, and inheritance, and - oh, you know - being allowed visitation in hospitals.
I’ve faced this – I had to choose between lying on government paperwork, and being registered as in a domestic partnership. I chose not to commit a crime, and when my partner at the time was taken to a psychiatric ward by their mother (because they were asexual, and non-binary, I might add), you cannot imagine the pain and fear I felt, knowing it was that much harder to help them. I didn’t even have the legal right to visit my fiance in hospital if they were dying.
Even married asexuals face legal barriers when adopting children. A-spec relationships are discriminated against.
So, yes, there is legal oppression.
We are talking about legal oppression, we are talking about homelessness, and torture, and suicide, and rape, and hate.
A-spec trans people face significantly higher levels of homelessness, and eviction than any other demographic of trans people. A-spec people in general are discriminated against for housing, and hiring on similar levels to lesbian, gay and bisexual communities.
A-spec people experience some of the highest statistics for corrective rape of any marginalized community, rampant dehumanization, and a suicide rate that is genuinely horrifying.
A-spec are highly at risk for conversion therapy, and the entire spectrum is pathologized.
A-specs are sexually abused, harassed and raped constantly, and specifically for their a-spec orientation.
