When it came down to it, Turbo and Cupid made an excellent team.
Although traveling across worlds came with plenty of surprises, sometimes nice ones, mostly terrible ones that caused his Cybug data to react in the most unpleasant of ways. But this surprise really took the cake.
He blinked a few times, not really sure if he believed what he was seeing. “Cupid?” He called, the girl turned around, Turbo’s face broke out in a grin and an excited glitch “CuP1D, it i5 y_U!”
“Turbo?” The match maker flew up to him equally excited, “Oh my goodness, what are you doing here?”
“I was gonna ask you the same thing.” Turbo replied, glancing around, he’d been to her home world only once, but he was sure this wasn’t it.
Cupid laughed and pulled her bow out of seemingly nowhere, and pretended to hook an arrow to it, “Oh, you know just the regular duty. This job takes you places.” She said firing the imaginary arrow at an imaginary target. “But you haven’t answered me yet, what are you doing here?”
Typically Turbo avoided telling people about the strange weapon he had received, and the mission that came with it, but Cupid was one of his closest friends so he was going to make an exception. He held out his hand to summon his keyblade so he could show it off, but movement caught his eye. Oh no. He jumped back, pulling Cupid behind him, and pointed to a black shape crawling from the shadows.
“That!” He hissed and dove forward, his Keyblade appeared in a flash and Turbo sliced the shadow in two. He glanced around to be sure there weren’t anymore. None were immediately seen, but he knew there would be more.
He straightened up and turned back to an alarmed Cupid, “So, yeah, that. The Heartless, they’re what I’m doing here.” He replied.
“Heartless…”Cupid repeated with a thoughtful look, “So that’s what they’re called.”
“You know about them?” Turbo asked.
“No, not exactly.” She replied, drifting back toward him, “But I’ve seen them. They’ve infested a lot of the worlds I’ve been to on the job, and several of those worlds were completely destroyed not long after.”
Turbo bit his lip, and tried to fill Cupid in on what actually very little he knew about the Heartless. “They originated from a video game world, not one from an arcade, I don’t think but one of the home system games. They’re kind of like the Cybugs, they only have one instinct to seek out Hearts- including the Heart of worlds.”
“That sounds dreadful.” Cupid gasped.
“Yeah, what makes it worse is they can only be stopped with one kind of weapon.” He lifted his Keyblade for her to see. “I don’t know too much about it myself, but apparently these keys are the only things that can release the hearts they’ve capture, otherwise the Heartless just appear somewhere else.”
“Ah,” Cupid tugged an arrow off her back, “That explains why my arrows don’t do anything.” She sighed and put the arrow back.
Turbo didn’t like seeing his friend look so bummed that she couldn’t help. “Hey,” He said, “Like I said, I don’t know much about the Keyblade or the Heartless, but you know, I bet if you took out a Heartless’s body, I could use the Keyblade to release it’s heart.”
He twirled his Keyblade just for show, “I’ll follow you while you do your lovey-dovey thing, and if we see any Heartless we can team up to take them out. Whaddya say Cupid, wanna team up?”
Cupid folder her arms while she considered the offer, “You don’t have anywhere you need to be, do you?” She asked, biting her lower lip slightly.
“Nah, I’m just kind of wandering until I find Heartless and taking them out when I do. I don’t have any way of tracking them, so I might as well go with you.” He explained.
“Alright.” Cupid agreed after another moment of thinking it over, “Looks like we have a partnership.”
Turbo offered his hand to her and couldn’t help imagining the narration that would follow if they were still in a video game Cupid has joined your party. No sooner than they had shaken hands did their first mission as a team begin, as more Heartless suddenly appeared from the shadows.
“Look out!” Turbo cried, and turned his Keyblade on the black monsters.
“Yikes!” Cupid leaped into the air, and started loosing arrows on them from above.
As Turbo theorized, Cupid’s arrow’s pierced their bodies, but just popped up again if he didn’t release the Hearts. “Whoa!” Turbo dropped and rolled to get out of the way of a set of claws lunging at him. When he was on his feet the same Heartless that attacked him got an arrow through the eye, Turbo slashed quickly in order to free the captured heart.
Where do the hearts go once they’ve been freed? Turbo wondered suddenly. He hadn’t ever thought about it before. In video games they were always random NPC who were perfectly fine once the game was off. But this world wasn’t a video game, and he had no idea what happened when his Keyblade did it’s job.
With Cupid’s help the Heartless were cleared in half the time he could have done it on his own. He was still pretty tired after the last Shadow fell under his Keyblade. Turbo toppled over, panting but but more exhilarated than exhausted. He started to laugh, “Ha…hahahaha!” He wiped his brow, “Heh, whew! Man, that almost get’s the blood pumping as much as a race does!” He joked.
Cupid laughed too, “Yeah, what a work out.” She offered him her hand to help him back to his feet. “I’m definitely thinking a team up was a good call.”
Turbo was about to reply when the ground started to shake underneath him. “Wh-wha? Whoa!”
“Turbo!” Cupid caught his hand and carried him into the air. The ground continued to shake and split. Then, a huge black shape emerged from the broken Earth. “T-Turbo…? What is that?”
It had to be a Heartless, but it was bigger than any he’d ever seen. It had an almost humanoid appearance, but for the wide heart-shaped gap in it’s chest. Instead of answering, Turbo pointed down to it, “Cupid we need to take that thing out!” He said.
“But- how are we supposed to-” Cupid started to argue when the creature lashed out at them. “Waaah!”
Turbo fell from her grasp, “Cupid! Ah!” He landed on his back, and his body spasmed with pain before he manage to pick himself up. “C-error- C_p—iD!?” He could see her only a few yards from where he’d landed, it looked like she was unconscious.
The monster had swatted them out of the sky like insects, which was unfortunate because another insect was very displeased with the situation. Turbo grasped his keyblade. No, he couldn’t change into his Cybug form now. It was too unpredictable, he and Cupid needed to defeat that Heartless, the Bug would fight, yes, but it could easily turn on Cupid to. No, not now…!
His body flashed and exploded with red pixels, but his Keyblade also glowed, reacting to his Cybug data. The Cybug took control, that much was clear from the markings on his face, but he didn’t transform. Something had change, the Cybug data was acting like a powerboost. He moved faster, had better resistance to the dark attacks the Heartless spewed.
Cupid was still unconscious. They Cybug recognized her as an ally. He had to protect her. He raised his Keyblade and fought with a beastly savagery that Turbo was not capable of on his own. Heartless and Cybugs were equally matched, seeing as they both fought by instinct alone, but Turbo had the advantage of having a Keyblade, the Heartless proved no match for it.
After a grueling battle, the giant creature fell. As it did, Cupid regained consciousness. “Turbo?” She called gently, but he didn’t answer. The Keyblade released the Heart, but it’s job wasn’t done. The giant Heartless had been on a mission, it was after the world’s Heart, the Keyblade responded as if it had it’s own mind, shining and glowing, there was a strange sound, like a door being locked as it sealed the keyhole protecting the Heart of the world, or whatever it was doing.
When it was over, Turbo exploded in pixels again. The Cybug markings vanished and he collapsed. “Turbo!” Cupid caught him, she brushed his hair out of his face. “Turbo! Turbo are you alright can you hear me?”
It was a few seconds, but Turbo groaned in response and struggled to get his eyes open. “C-Cupid?” He asked, “Wha- What happened, where’s the Heartless?”
“It’s gone, you got it.” She said, and helped him get to his feet again. “I take it you don’t usually run into things like that?”
Turbo bit his lip, “No, I mean, I’ve seen several types of Heartless, but nothing like that one.” He took a step forward, he stumbled a bit, but was recovering fast.
“Are you alright?” Cupid asked, “Turbo?”
“I…I’m fine.” He replied, “I think I just need to rest for a little bit.”
“I think you should too.” Cupid replied, and took a globe from her bag, one of the ones she borrowed from North, “C’mon, we’ll go back to my place.”
