Open AU Weekend Starter: The Dinner
Corazana, Princess of Hearts, heiress to all Wonderland, eyed the ballroom and dining room with a critical, skeptical eye. The decor was magnificent, the stunning palace mosaics draped in silk hangings, the silk a brilliant red shade to match that of the tablecloth. Glittering gold plates were set at each place, accompanied by a wine glass and a tea cup, and while it had all the finery Wonderland could offer, the princess was puzzled.
Drumming her fingers on the table, she asked, “Your Majesty, could I ask a question?”
The Queen of Hearts waved away a lady-in-waiting who had been showing her a seating plan, instead making her way to her daughter. Like the Queen, Cora was dressed in a red gown richly embroidered with gold, jewels interwoven in her hair, though unlike the Queen, she did not wear a massive tiara. But that was as it should be, for her mother was first in the land, and Cora, as third, could only learn from her.
“Yes, my child?” The Queen asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Your Majesty, I am...confused,” Cora began, immediately retracting her fingers from the table and placing them elegantly on her gown at the Queen’s sharp look of disapproval, “and as all ways are your ways, I was hoping you could enlighten me. You have always told me that we are a proud nation, a noble queendom, in need of no one and nothing else,” the princess bit her lip, “But if that’s the case...why are we inviting people over for a state banquet?”
The Queen of Hearts pursed her lips and sighed, “Corazana, why is a raven like a writing desk?”
“I- I don’t know, Your Majesty,” Cora admitted with a blush. It was considered dishonorable not to be able to answer a Wonderlandian riddle, particularly as its princess.
“Exactly. You don’t know. That is why you should trust in me and my judgment. You are my heiress, but you have much to learn. Come, look here.” The Queen snapped her fingers, and the lady-in-waiting who had borne the seating plan curtsied, this time returning with a map of Auradon, “Here. Look at all these splintered, fractious kingdoms. Great monarchs once ruled...until they let their enemies get the best of them. Now, anarchy, unrest, and lawlessness abound in these lands. And you know I cannot abide disorder, Corazana.”
“Yes, Your Majesty,” the princess said, though she didn’t truly see where her mother was going with this. Wonderland had been isolationist since its inception. Outsiders were dangerous and to be avoided at all costs. That was her mother’s policy, especially after “The Alice Incident” (her father’s words).
“It is my intention to invite all the current rulers of these lands- however they stole their present positions -to dinner,” the Queen explained, “At which point, I will poison them. While the leaders are dying, your father will have simultaneously led our armies across Auradon, announcing the news of the demise of their rulers...and the news of their being absorbed into Wonderland.”
“Your Majesty...” Cora trailed off, somewhat surprised at her mother’s audacity, “You...you’re planning on murdering the leaders of the other countries? Conquering? Taking over?”
The Queen of Hearts smiled dangerously, “I am planning of ridding all the lands of injustice, and giving the populace the Queen- and rule of law -they deserve.” The Queen bent forwards, examining Cora critically:
“Now, it will be your job to entertain our guests. Charm them...and then ensure each drains their glass for the toast at midnight,” the Queen of Hearts stole a glance over Cora’s shoulder:
“Corazana, go. It appears our first guest has arrived.”
With a gulp, Cora turned around.
