âUgh, I know right?â Lakhi jumped at the chance to be complimented by a royal, simultaneously relieved the princess of Peru knew who she was. Finally, credit where credit is due, âCan you believe some people told me it wasnât a good idea? what do they know? This whole thing is totally⊠traffic-stopping!â
Blinding with itâs ugliness was more like it, but Lakhiâs smile made it sound sincere still. Internally, Lakhi always had a love-hate relationship with sparkles. They were annoying, gaudy, and weighed down her clothes, but also a measurement of wealth and good appearance as she understood it. She hadnât even had the money to buy a phone case yet, and was still using the phone the school commissioned to her when she arrived, so a little jealousy was in due order after watching Quilla.
Itâs possible that events like Pride may not be entirely safe for some individuals to partake in, depending on their parents. Quilla voices as much, but chooses her words careful so she can avoid offending the girl. âI, well...I mean, itâs a beautiful celebration, truly. I think people may just be voicing some...safety concerns. Not everyoneâs parents are as accepting as others, right? If students with those kinds of parents are caught participating in such a public event, it may mean trouble for them.â
Quilla sets down the blindingly sparkled phone case and picks up on that had yet to be decorated. âI could make you one, too, if youâd like? Doesnât have to be a phone case, either. In whatever design you choose, of course.â She takes a step back to give Lakhiâs outfit a good, thorough look, to get a sense of her style. âI take it youâre not as big on bling as I am. I can work with that.â

Hyson let out a relieved sigh. Heâd hate if he accidentally got Rue involved in all this drama and personally didnât really like the thought of people invading his personal affairs. To be honest he rather it forever stay low which mean he needed to get Fable to stay quiet on the subject.
âSorry for asking, it just you usually know everything and Iâd like to keep that relationship as private as possible. But considering Fable knows it might not stay that way.â He sighed softly.
Quilla nods, smirking a little at the mention of Fable. âFable does enjoy her gossip. Iâm not surprised she beat me in that Castlecoming category. Iâm a little bitter, sure, but not surprised.â She shakes her head and brushes the thought away with a wave of her hand, âAnyway, sure thing. I may love gossip, myself, but I do know how to keep promises. Iâll try and shut down any conversations on the topic I come across.â
Aye Quilla, miss me? How's it been since I saw ya last?
âJay? Holy Inti, itâs been forever! Itâs beenâŠa trip. But I can get into that later. How have you been?â
âWell arenât /you/ a dreamboat? Welcome to Auradon Prep, cutie! Iâm Quilla.â
Reggie blushed, laughing in embarrassment at the compliments.
âH-Hehe,â He stammers. âUmâŠthanks for the welcome! I-Itâs great to be here.â The brunette lets out a small, hoarse laugh.
He wasnât used to being called cute (except for by his mom and aunt Dolores), or a dreamboatâŠor being complimented much at all on his looks, really, so to have it happen to him was both uncomfortable and flattering at the same time.
Still, he was raised to be polite and to accept a compliment, so he just gave the girl his signature crooked, unsure beam of a smile.
âNice to meet you, Quilla. Iâm Reggie Rabbit.â He introduced, offering his hand for her to shake.
Quilla finds his nervous laughter and stammering endearing, and it puts her at ease. Of all the responses to her flirting sheâs gotten thus far, his felt the most genuine.
âYouâre very welcome, Reggie. Itâs lovely to meet you. You finding everything alright so far?â she asks, taking his hand and giving it a soft shake rather than her signature firm one, not wanting to make the boy any more uncomfortable than he already seems.

Quills quick question. How much of my relationship with Rue is public knowledge or well gossip?
Quillaâs brows scrunch together, caught a little off-guard, the question seeming to have come out of nowhere. People usually come to her to ask her to dish out all the hot goss on others, not so much on themselves. Though she can understand his curiosity.
âWellâŠâ she winces, not wanting to upset him. âThere has been speculationâŠthough you can rest easy. Nothing too scandalous.â

âWell, anyone from the Sugar Rush game, or other arcade games; theyâd be completely code. Iâm half-human, half-code. I honestly wouldnât put it past my dad to have made more of us, though itâs just really hard to tell. People either know you too well or not at all on the Isle,â He shrugged, not wanting to think about that whole situation any more than was completely necessary. On some level, maybe having siblings wouldâve been nice, but heâd be genuinely worried if any of them were stuck with a glitch as well. Maybe his dad really had multiple children, and just sacked the ones who didnât make the cut. Which was simultaneously nice to know Cole was one who made it through, and terrifying to think his dad couldâve been in charge of multiple children. Hopefully their mothers had been more involved than his was.
âAsk me another time, it does drain my battery to do it, so I have to be careful,â Otherwise, it was actually pretty fun to show off his little electric zaps and shocks. Sometimes draining his battery would only make his glitch worse, though, âYeah, you know how the barrier is like, actually getting super weak?â Actually maybe Quilla didnât, but she does now, âI really wish I knew how it worked better, but it kind of looked like burning little holes in paper.â
âOh, right,â she grimaces, only just remembering that fact. Coleâs existence is a unique one, no doubt, but sheâs certain thereâs got to be others who share this with him. And if so, there should be resources available for them all. She canât even imagine something as vital as health services being unavailable to her, and while Cole seems to have managed, she still worries.
Quilla nods, âRight, of course. Whenever youâre up for it.â Sheâs incredibly intrigued, of course, but sheâd have to force herself to sit on it for a while, curiosity be damned. Though it does beg the question, what else can do?
âIt...it is?â She hadnât known. Knowing things is her game, but this, this quite important piece of information is news to her. âWow, I...â she pauses. She had been able to sneak onto the Isle on occasion, though she couldnât have gotten through the barrier on her own, having had to pay off some magical guards to help her through. She had learned of some powerful people being able to break through, so sheâd assumed it was hard to do so.
Quilla laughs, despite herself. âWell, in that case, I think I got ripped off,â she jokes. She quickly explains to clear any confusion, âIâve snuck onto the Isle a few times before, with a little magical help. Guess those guards arenât as powerful as I thought they were.â

Fern waved Quillaâs thanks off with her hand. She could tell Quilla was starting to get cold feet thinking about the moral ramifications of the whole deal. Fern never thought twice about giving bad people exactly what they deserve, or even giving good people what bad people deserve. Fern wasnât one to judge, she was a pretty bad person herself, but at the end of the day, if someone wanted nightmares, sheâd give them nightmares.
She held no emotional investment in how Quilla was clearly describing her own family life. Though it did sound awfully similar to her own. However unlike Quilla, Fern had said good riddance to her father before she was 3 years old. On some level, Fern seriously doubted the things that scared Quilla would also scare her ex. Bad people didnât operate like that. Scaring wasnât enough to make bad people stop, this was just Quilla wanting to believe her ex still had a bit of moral compass still left in him, and that he could change when given the right motivation.
âIâve never tried scaring someone straight before. From what youâve told me, he doesnât seem like the kind of guy to care about many people. You care about what your parents think of you, does this guy?â Fern raised an eyebrow, âYou get bothered when people donât believe you, would he be bothered if people didnât believe him?â
Quilla blinks, silent for a beat as she ponders of Fernâs question. Itâs an incredibly valid one; Sumaqâs narcissistic tendencies makes him seem the type who wouldnât care. At least, not as much as she. Still, he does seem to care what the people of his kingdom, as well as her own, think of himâmoral compass aside. His egoâs huge, but fragile. Perhaps he wouldnât be scared straight. Perhaps it would only be enough to frighten him.
Would that be enough for her?
âI mean...heâd...he may throw a fit. But...â Quilla purses her lips and nods. âYeah, I donât know if thatâd necessarily frighten him, much less change his ways.â She rakes a hand threw her curls in frustration, at a loss. âWhat I can tell you is that he does care what people think of him. He puts up this...very carefully curated front for the public. Itâs not so much a care thing as it is, I guess, a power thing? Maybe...â She drifts away a little in thought, an idea coming to her. âPowerlessness.â

âYour art is looking so great!â Lakhi said excitedly, before she even looked at their canvas. As she turned though, Lakhi had to do a double take to stop herself from gasping, âWoooow! Thatâs so⊠orginial⊠and creative!â
The outdoor painting event had been going so well, Lakhi had been mingling with royals all morning. Not many people knew her, but now was a perfect chance to make good connections and get close to some of the royals here. Everyone loved a good pride event, right? Even if Lakhi hadnât put a drop of paint on a canvas herself.
Quilla laughs, surprised at the girlâs reaction. Art was never exactly her area of expertise, but she did want to try and engage more with the artist community at Auradon Prep. She enjoyes âbedazzlingâ clothing and accessories from time to time, and sheâd gotten fairly good at it. Still, her bedazzling work left much to be desired.
She holds the now-jeweled phone case up to the light to observe how it sparkles. Just as she thought, needs more glitter.
âThank you,â she responds appreciatively, all the same, glad someone actually found her work appealing. Or maybe itâs the colors sheâs been working with? The pan-flagâs colors are very aesthetically appealing.
âLakhi! Always lovely to see that pretty face. I gotta say, this event was an amaze idea.â

It almost startled Cole when the answer finally occurred to Quilla. This was the most excited heâd ever seen anyone talking about their sleep schedules. Granted, Cole was one Lucky Duck that didnât have to worry about whether or not his body was charging, only that it was running out of charge at an above-average speed. If he was fully human, sleep would probably be a lot more important, rather than just routine mind maintenance, âYou could also always do sleeping masks, cold or hot treatments, aromatherapy- I think there are some things that people eat to make themselves sleepy? I donât know, thereâs probably lots of options for regaining control of your sleep schedule.â
âIâve definitely considered checking with doctors, but unfortunately I would probably be more of a test subject than a patient to diagnose,â He clicked his teeth a little, trying to think, âI doubt Iâm the only one out there with this sort of⊠half-human, half-coding biology, but itâs also not something you see every day. So, unless Iâve got a plethora of siblings out there,â Which, now that Cole thought about his dad, he couldnât be sure that wasnât the case, âthat would provide a more substantial testing group, itâs going to be a little difficult finding answers as to why my body is the way it is with only myself for human doctors to perform trial and error on. Thatâs said, Iâve learned a lot through trial and error myself through my life though, ever since I was a toddler.â
âWanna hear something really fun? Actually, two things,â He chuckled, âOne, I can charge your phone by sticking my nails in the port. Two, I used to burn little, tiny holes in the barrier with electricity. Not big enough to do anything with, and theyâd close right back up, but it was kind of fun. I think it worked as a sort of anti-magic, new technology versus old magic.â
âIâve tried everything short of medicating,â Quilla admits, sighing with a little bit of exasperation. âThe masks, the aromatherapy, yoga musicâthe whole nine yards. I think I just need to find a way to...I donât know, zone out before bed? Not have my mind on a million things? Itâs exhausting, but I canât seem to shut it off. I guess itâs âcause nighttime is the only quiet downtime I have to think through everything, uninterrupted. But thereâs just...so much.â
Quilla winces when he says test subject, the idea of being trapped and studied intensely for long periods of time sounding absolutely terrifying. âI mean, thereâs...thereâs Ferris and Velocity...but, yeah, thereâs....not very many. Not around here, at least. Thatâs no excuse for there not to be resources for you, though. Perhaps the doctor should be half-human, half-code themselves? Iâm...I wish I had more answers for you.â She purses her lips in wonder. âDo you...do you know for sure that you donât have any siblings? Or half-siblings, anyway?â She holds in a smile as her mind wanders to the thought Cole as a toddler, and manages to stop herself from asking for his baby pictures.
âOh, what?â she immediately fishes her phone out of her bag and holds it out to him. âCanât just say something like that and not show me, Stretch,â she insists. Her smile falters a little as he mentions burning through the barrier. Not from worry, rather from intrigue. âWait...what? Thatâs...huh.â Quilla had recently started looking into the intersections between science and magic, and despite being an area of study that sheâd argue is essential to understanding their worldâ âtheir universeâ âthe resources and the information on the subject are scarce.

askfrightfulfernâ:
Fernâs barely taking notes on what Quilla is actually saying, instead her mid is going wild with ideas a conceited, power-hungry prince would be scared of. Having his crown shoved where the sun doesnât shine would be one thing, and probably a good revenge from Quillaâs perspective, but Fern knew she could do better. The immobilizing night terrors she gave Ingrid had been a hoot, but that probably wasnât what Quilla was going for either, as fun as it would be to do again.
âIâll do you one better and make him wet the bed,â she said off-handedly with a smirk. She had a feeling this really wasnât about petty revenge, it was actually important to Quilla, so although she and the princess werenât friends, rulers had to support each other, didnât they? That is, if Fern was going to be a leader of Halloweentown someday.
Thinking that way made Fern feel a bit of a conscience about taking notes of Quillaâs weaknesses as well, though. A life of trying to do right by people was not one for her, Fern decided. Maybe sheâd just⊠hold off a little longer on Quilla. The princess was tormented enough by her public image, Fern would have to take credit for something later, âWhat sort of fabrications do you think he wouldnât want spread about himself?â
Quilla tries, and fails, to fight the smirk forming on her face at the prospect of Fern making the boy soil himself. She kills the smile immediately, however, as she wonders if it is in any way right to enjoy punishing him. Sure, Maq may deserve the punishment, and Quilla wants to make sure itâs enough to scare him straight so that heâd never hurt her or anyone else like that againâbut to enjoy it? That is a whole other thingâ âsomething she canât even argue is within a morally grey area.
She clears her throat and makes her intentions clear. âI just need it to be enough to stop him from trying to convince everyone that Iâm not of...sound mind. Maybe...maybe a dream that would put him in the same position heâs putting me in, so he at least knows how I feel. How...scary it can be when no one believes you, when everything you worked your whole life for isnât enough, when you even have to convince your own parents...â She closes her eyes and clenches her fists, trying to maintain herself. Her parents do believe her, but that hadnât happened instantly. Convincing them wasnât easy; the fact that their first instinct was to side with what they described as the more logical-sounding person rather than their own daughter still makes Quillaâs chest ache.
âThank you, by the way. For agreeing to do this. I owe you one.â
âThe only driving youâre doing right now is /driving me wild/ with that smile, sweetie. Quilla Kuzco. Itâs a pleasure to meet you.â
âHello darling! Itâs great to meet you, Iâm Velocity Von Sweetz! Youâre a real flatterer arenât you?â
asksugar-rush-racerâ:
âThis school is so huge, theres probably lots of undiscovered places for me to hang out.â They mused with a chuckle, âActually Iâd probably be lost right now if you hadnât run into me.â
âDo you study in the library a lot? Maybe we could do some study sessions soon.â
âIt truly is. Speaking of undiscovered, Erika de Claire and I have been investigating something peculiar in the library, and we could really use a third team member in our investigation.â She smiles and pats the side of their arm lightly. âLucky you,â she jests.
âI, uh, yes, I do. I sometimes tutor in there.â Quilla squints a little for a moment, wondering if this was Velocityâs way of asking her out. Probably not, she concludes. All of the recent Castlecoming fuss mustâve gotten her mind in a tizzy. She shrugs, giving them a nod. âSure, I could always use a study-buddy! Are you planning on taking classes over the summer, then?â
