It’s been quite long since he had cleaned the toad mask, and it showed. Zacharie held that piece of apparatus up to the sky, and behind the visage of a cat mask, frowned as he took in the dirt and smears on the front. He turned it around, shuddered, and quickly turned it back to the front. It was odd, he noted, how rarely dirt showed up until you began cleaning.
He wasn’t in the Zones. The last time he had decided to clean his apparatus there ended in a sort of mild disaster, with one or more of his filters floating away into the distance. It took him quite some while to get some replacements. So instead, this time he decided to find somewhere mostly unpolluted, with actual honest water instead of plastic oceans to deal with the equipment.
He dunked one of the filters underneath the rushing water of the stream, and watched as the accumulated filth trailed away, to who knew where. Perhaps the sea. Perhaps a city’s reservoir. He wasn’t going to apologise if it was.
