YWCA OF CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS
by Askew One
In 1885 14 women of Worcester, MA founded a local YWCA on Main St, committed to the "welfare of young women who are dependent on their own exertions for support.” Since 1960 the YWCA of Central Massachusetts has occupied a much larger facility at Franklin St and Francis J. McGrath Blvd, and when the international Pow! Wow! Festival phenomenon expanded to Worcester in 2016, New Zealand artist Elliot O'Donnell was on hand to paint these stunning portraits of two women associated with @YWCACM : one an employee of YWCA and one then attending the daycare program. Askew's art practice has evolved through several stages to a style he now describes as "'portraiture by alternative means' that is part still life and part abstraction." Askew now incorporates digital techniques and 3D scans to create compositions he sees as "a recording of human movement through urban space." @askewone/ @powwowworcester/
@sydneygjames and @askewone have been primarily working at night so I decided to shoot their in progress wall with a tripod and a long exposure. This piece is dedicated to #OurIssue, a campaign founded by @detroitlionsnfl's @dre_levy and his wife which addresses the issue of the male role in today's rape culture. Please visit all of the artist's and founder's pages to get more information. #SydneyJames #Askew #SydneyGJames #AskewOne #GirlRaisedInDetroit #Askew1 @muralsinthemarket #muralsinthemarket #muralsinthemarket2017 #mitm2017 #detroitstreetart #streetart #streetartspringbreak #streetartdetroit #artnerd #artington @1xrun #1xRun #1xFam #1xFamily #sonya7ii #sonyimages #sonyalpha (at Detroit, Michigan)

CONTAINER YARD
Askew One and Drew
Self-taught artist, designer, photographer, and video director, Askew1, has a reach extending far beyond his home in New Zealand with an impressive list of work completed in Australia, Asia, Europe, and across the U.S. Widely recognized for his unique approach to mixing abstract and figurative art styles, he is constantly experimenting with new and different styles. Drew Merritt grew up in rural New Mexico and had a complicated and almost accidental journey to his “art.” Now in Los Angeles he actually rejects the label “artist”—everyone in LA wants to lay claim to that title—so he prefers not to talk about himself and just let his painting speak. . . . and his beautiful figure painting speaks volumes. For this collaborative work on Seaton St. in the LA Arts District, Drew focused on the more fully rendered sections of eyes, cheeks and lips.
