Girl Talk
‘Hallo. Whatcha doin?’ A voice suddenly broke the complete silence.
Jilomena looked up from her open wardrobe doors with a slight smile, which quickly turned back into a frown of concentration as she turned her attention to the contents of said wardrobe once more. ‘I’m trying to create a spell that knows how to pick cute outfits for me.’ As she spoke, she was absent-mindedly twiddling her wand between her fingers, twirling it as a majorette might a baton.
Flip flopped onto Jil’s bed with a snort. ‘Ha. As if you need the assistance, ne? You’ve got enough cute outfits to sink the Titanic.’ The small fairy propped her face up on her hands, legs kicking idly as she too joined in the study of the clothing that threatened to overflow the small space it was crammed into.
Jilomena rolled her eyes. ‘Not quite that many. And if so, how come I can never seem to find the right outfit for a date? Perhaps it’s me…perhaps I’m the proble…OW!’ She was cut off mid-word by a carefully aimed acorn, ducking just in the nick of time to narrowly avoid being hit by a second. ‘Okay, okay. I get it. Quit chucking acorns!’
This was met by a small, malevolent chuckle. ‘Got you to stop, ne?’
‘Yes. True.’ Jil rubbed her forehead with a giggle. ‘Okay, so I’m not the problem. So how come it is I can never seem to find a decent thing to wear in all this lot?’ She waved her wand in the direction of the pile of clothing.
Flip sat upright. ‘Maybe you need to look at it with fresh eyes, hmm?’ She directed her gaze on the open doors for a few moments, then waved her hand. A pair of slim cut jeans came dancing out, along with a cosy black jumper and a pair of suede boots.
Jilomena watched admiringly. Her friend’s talents with natural magic never ceased to amaze her. And Flip needed no wand. Her magic was a part of her, flowing like the change of one season to the next. She studied the chosen outfit for a moment before nodding her approval. ‘Yes. I like it. I like it very much. That will do nicely. Thank you.’ She rewarded her bestie with a beaming smile.
‘You are welcome.’ Flip fluttered over to place a quick kiss on Jilomena’s cheek. ‘But I think you need to be a bit kinder to yourself, ne? Or else I’ll throw something else at you, perhaps a rock next time.’ The fairy giggled darkly, not meaning a word of what she said.
Jil threw back her head and laughed. ‘You do and I’ll chuck it back. Now that we’ve decided what I’m wearing, get your bag out and we’ll start getting ready to meet the boys.’ They were going on a double date that night to their favourite casual restaurant, hence Jilomena’s indecision over what to wear.
Tinking laughter and perfume soon filled the air, settling around the girls in a sort of aura not unlike their magic as they dressed for their date.
