There are worse people she could have summoned to Noxus.
...She could have invited Xin Zhao.
But fine, fine, there aren’t many worse people she could have summoned to Noxus. It’s not as if she asked Shirou here for an entirely frivolous reason- and if she could have gone to Ionia herself to see him, she’d have been there in a heartbeat!
(For some reason, she no longer has an open invitation.)
So she sent a letter and, after some time, he replied, and she even took the extra step of sending a small company of guards to meet him at a waypoint. It wouldn’t do to let him wander the city alone- she does prefer to see him all in one piece.
And now, finally, she finds herself waiting. It’s easily her least favorite thing to do, but it can’t be helped. She won’t be doing herself or Shirou a favor by seeking him out before he reaches her, and she has a trustworthy lot looking after him anyway. As trustworthy as she’s found in this dreadful place.
So she sits at a desk too large and grim for her, in a room with a tall ceiling and dark tapestries between windows that hardly seem to let adequate light in, even when the sun is at its highest. She alternates between attempting to navigate one of the dusty texts her predecessor left behind and simply staring at the carpet, daydreaming about what could possibly be taking them so long.
(What if they’ve been held up in Zaun? What if they run into the only lone imbecile with a personal attachment to Singed?)
She knows it’s paranoid to think that anything’s gone wrong.
It’s just that everything’s been wrong, lately.

“We have tea where I’m from,” Shiren complains, eyeing the entrance of the house warily. “It isn’t like I haven’t had it before.”
Shirou laughs in his gentle, shy, infuriating way (which is the only way he can laugh, in her experience) and keeps walking forward. “That isn’t why I invited you.”
Yasu and Rin are friendly enough that Shiren can convince herself she’s just imagining the tightness in their welcome. Shirou and his parents together manage to keep Shiren from making the conversation awkward; she doesn’t drop anything, or mispronounce anything, or let them know that what she is goes directly against their whole philosophy. Tea is dull to her and always has been, but it smells good and it warms her nicely. And there’s something calming about seeing the sigil of the Kindred even if their kind of worship isn’t at all what she’d see back home. She gets… comfortable, even, before she leaves.
It might not have been such a bad idea, letting Shirou drag her into this. Maybe.
