Unpopular fandom opinions about Mexico?
Mexico never was New Spain
What do I mean with this? Well, many fans believe that Mexico former name was New Spain before her (or his if the OC is a boy) independence. At first I tought the same, but when I was watching Hetalia and studying deeply the history of my country I started to disagree.
The territory of New Spain not only covered Mexico, but also Central America, the Carribean countries, Heck! even the Philippines and some parts of USA and Canada! So why Mexico is the only one named New Spain in all the fanfics and fanart, if all of these countries were also part of that territory?
My answer is that New Spain was the big house were everyone lived together, and eventually some of these countries started to gain their independences and to live on their own as free countries.
It´s like the case of Russia. In Hetalia, he is never called the Soviet Union. In fact, he says that during this era he, his sisters, and the Baltics lived together, and then one by one started to leave.
Another example of why I think Mexico former name was not New Spain, is that America is never referred as Thirteen Colonies when he was a kid and before his independence.
So in conclusion, my Mexico OC has always been Mexico, and during the colonial era, Spain was her boss, while she was the leader of the countries who were part of the New Spain. And at the same time, some of them, like Cuba, the Philippines and Guatemala, leaded other territories. Yes I know, is like a pyramid of power, but that´s how a viceroyalty worked.
Also I believe that America and Canada were not official members of the New Spain house, because Spain never found them nor claimed them for himself. But I agree with the fandom that this could justify the fact that Mexico knew them since they were kids.
