Hi! A.) I love your writing. B.) I love your taste. I'd love it if you could rec me some of your favorite Hannigram fics that you feel are completely in character? Like top notch, Very In Character, in character. I feel like I've exhausted the best longer fics, but I know that can't be true. Thank you!

Fic recs is always like Sophie’s Choice because I feel like there’s a LOT of good stuff out there. So I’ve tried to narrow it down and compile a list that’s mostly fics over 5k, non-au, and completed.

(Also if I’ve done a very very bad job and there’s a lot of stuff in this list that you’ve already read then by all means send me a chat and tell me more specifically what you like in fics. I don’t bite, I swear!)

A Gentler Ending by @damnslippyplanet [Everything slippy writes is SO GOOD and there’s several other longer fics in her repertoire, but I’m a sucker for a happy ending and this is a very nice fix-it]

Better Living Through Pheremones by @unicornmagic [Okay, this is ABO so it’s technically au but it’s incredible ABO with perfect characterization, so it goes on the list. If you’ve ever been on the fence about this trope I think this one will convince you to get into it]

Sweet Milk by @granpappy-winchester [Why do I bother to give myself rules? This one is technically kind of a WIP but where it currently ends also works as an ending. Anyways, don’t let the kink put you off- this is most excellent, in character exploration of something Will would totally be wound tight about and I love it so. Everything granpappy does is perfect so go through her entire archive]

Ganymede by @staticraining [The ganymede metaphor fic dreams are made of. Great dialogue here, and also some great rarepairs in their archive]

Blackbird by @emungere [On the truly off chance you HAVEN’T read this, I’m putting this in here because it’s rare that we see longer case-fic in fandom and this story does it very, very well, with excellent dialogue between Hannibal and Will]

Shark Tank by @xzombiexkittenx [I’m like a Jehovah’s Witness, knocking at everyone’s door and making sure they’ve read this fic. It’s kind of au but also kind of not au but all in all perfect. The fic I’ve read no less than ten times thanks to international flights and ibooks. Also, if you’ve read this be sure you go through their archive and read everything else too, it’s all veeery in character]

Hesperides by @genufa [This is a lovely series with beautiful prose. She also has a longer fic in her archives called The Weight of the World and its Heaven which I’ve only just started to read and so far is very good!]

If the Heavens Ever Did Speak by @crossroadscastiel [she always writes excellent dialogue between hannibal and will and this is no exception. A rare glimpse of honest Hannibal, though it does come at the tip of a blade]

Your Obediant Servant by @lovecrimevariations [you wouldn’t think that hannibal sending will artistically drawn dick pics from prison could ever be in character but in this fic it IS and it is done so so well]

Hannigram please!

when or if I started shipping it:

God, when haven’t I been shipping hannigram? As soon as I was brought around to watching the first episode my immediate thoughts were ‘that hannibal looks like a sensual lizard. wow, he looks thirsty for will’s attention. wow they need to bone like, yesterday.’

But I think as far as seeing them romantically and not just....smuttily, my fate was sealed somewhere in season two? Probably when Will showed up at Hannibal’s door post-makeover. Nobody goes to that level of effort for someone they just want to get revenge on, Willy boy. Not unless it’s sexy revenge.

What makes me happy about them:

That in spite of everything, every bad quality each of them has and every poor choice they’ve ever made, they see each other for what they are and (mostly) accept each other.

What makes me sad about them:

The fact that no matter how hard they try, realistically they’re always going to end up locked in some kind of mind game that ends with them separating, if only for a while. Which isn’t really a sad feeling but rather a bittersweet one.

Also that Hannibal left his red sweater behind in Baltimore and thus there is no chance we’ll ever get a shot of Will wandering their love/hideout shack in it.

Things done in fanfic that annoys me:

It’s less a hannigram specific thing and more a personal issue, but I just cannot do pet names. The moment I see a mongoose or a murder muffin or mylma-whatever it is I get twitchy. But it’s not an automatic back-button trigger for me, unless it’s used like, every other sentence.

Also? Un-tagged major character death. Because I read a fic that was like 10k, got emotionally invested in their love and then Will randomly stabbed Hannibal and regretted it and I mentally have not gotten over that image despite having read it two years ago. In fact I bet that I could be on my death bed and still recall that scene and well up because why god, why would any author do that to me??

Things I look for in fanfic:

Case fic? Good. Smut fic? Good. Fluff fic? Gooooood. Multi-chapter? One shot? All good. I am not a picky human being when it comes to fic type. (I am, however, incredibly picky about characterization, but that’s a rant for a different post)

My kinks:

THOSE PITS OF WONDER. There’s like a total of three fics I know of that mention them and honestly with hannibal’s scent kink it’s a travesty there’s not more.

(also massive apology if that’s your gif. I saved it off a buzzfeed post ages ago and god knows they don’t credit)

Also, a/b/o/. Rimming. Felching. The usual suspects, really.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:

Hahahaha, no.

Okay, I would be fine with Will ending up with a plethora of dogs and Hannibal with a cell with a window that overlooks Will’s backyard, but that is my hard limit here.

My happily ever after for them:

Overly idealistically: A house in a country without extradition treaties. A minimum of four dogs of varying breeds. Will preparing a fish to go with Hannibal’s people-based hors d’vors. Kisses in the kitchen.

Idealistically: Adjoining cells in the BSHCI with weekly conjugal visits. Jack Crawford already safely digested by them at their wedding reception (and by wedding reception I mean they exchanged rings and promises, and then had a celebratory hunt).

Realistically: They both actually die in each other’s arms, in love, fully accepting themselves and each other, and in a glorious hail of bullets.

DUDE I READ A HANNIGRAM FIC LIKE THAT AND I WAS SO FUCKING MAD AAHHHH. Also all 3 of your options for the two of them sound pretty nice. My favorite might even be the realistic one. Can you do Hannibal as a fandom too? THank yeee

I have a strange affection for the third option myself? Hannibal's face as they went over the cliff says he would not at all be opposed to going out that way.

And the fandom thing? Heck yes I can!

   Favorite character: Hannibal. Hannibal, Hannibal, Hannibal. I feel like I should be worried that I identify with him so much but aside from all the murder I really do. He’s so needy, and so faux pretentious, and so terribad at hiding all of his control freak issues. He runs off to other cities in fits of ennui and lovesickness and at the end of the day still has a sense of humor about all of it.

Also? All of the female characters. Every last one of them.

  Least Favorite character: I don’t really have a least favorite? At least not in the sense that I’d rather not see them on the show at all. I think the character that angers me the most is Jack with all his ego-fueled, stubborn, paternal bullshit but I still enjoy his presence in the narrative.

   5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Hannigram. Marlana. Bedlia/Chiyoh. Bedelia/Wine. Doctor Chilton/Suffering.

   Character I find most attractive: Margot. Bedelia. Alana. All of the female characters. I’m here, I’m queer, I’m in love with every single one of them.

   Character I would marry: Margot Verger.

   Character I would be best friends with: Freddie. She’s unrepentant, unapologetic, and irreverant, and with the amount of dirt she has on everyone you just know she’d be a good person to have a cocktail with and dish the dirt. She’s the living embodiment of  ‘Don’t have anything nice to say? Pull up a chair and sit here by me’ and considering the Hanniverse is all about hidden intentions, I dig that.    A random thought: What happened to all of Hannibal’s stuff back in Baltimore post-season 3? Is it still collecting dust in his house? Was it auctioned off for some twisted charity? Is it Evil Minds Museum Part Two: Cannibalistic Bloodbath Boogaloo? What becomes of a serial killer’s junk when he’s presumed dead?    An unpopular opinion: I personally do not enjoy the idea of long haired Hannibal. There. I said it.

   My canon OTP: Hannigram, duh!    Non-canon OTP: Chiyoh/Bedelia (though knowing bryan that one might not be non-canon forever! Anything is possible in his world of queer deus ex machina)    Most badass character: Aside from the obvious Hannibal and/or Will and all their adventures, I’d have to say Alana, Chilton, and Bedelia? They’ve all come out wounded on the other side of Hannibal’s shit, lived to tell the tale, and continued to push for whatever they thought was best/right, and that takes guts. Literally.    Pairing I am not a fan of: Bedannibal. Sorry, kiddos, I can’t get behind them as a legit romantic pairing.

   Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): I feel like Miriam Lass didn’t get her story ended in a satisfactory way. We see her incriminate Chilton and speak briefly to Will, but what happened after that? There was no clear severance of her character from the world of the FBI and I’d like to have seen that on screen.

   Favourite friendship: Bev + Will 4ever (muffled sobs)

3. Favorite line - Oh god this was so difficult, but most likely my favorite line of yours of all time was: "When it came to inciting dangerous choices, Helen of Troy had nothing on Hannibal Lecter." Because oh my god, that works on soooo many levels

Is it weird if I say I love that line too? Hannibal is such a shit stirrer, and you know he only gets away with half of it because of his beautiful face (with Will especially). And historical references are my jam, so I felt that worked rather well for him.

My current favorite is from a fic that’s still a WIP:

“Hannibal had always wanted codependency. In a land where Will didn’t speak the language, didn’t have any money of his own, and worried about being out by himself, he’d hit the Stockholm Syndrome inducing jackpot.”

Fic Writer Ask Game

Basically, why is Cal such an asshole and should I start watching the Path?? ?

Oh boy anon, take a seat and let me sing you a story of Cal Roberts.

Cal is a fucked up ball of alcoholism, violent rage, self-righteousness, and religious issues, which when combined create a person who will always make the worst possible choice in any situation. And when he does not get his way he resorts to hissy threats or fists until he does get the outcome he wanted.

He’s just constantly in a state of full-throttle, keyed up, stick-up-his-ass-he-is-liable-to-pull-out-and-whoop-some-ass-with stressed out man and yet he’s trying to lead a huge group of people. Which is a job which comes with its own issues, and those issues pile on to his personal issues to create a walking, ticking time bomb.

Basically, you should ask yourself:

1) Do I like Hugh Dancy covered in blood?

2) Do I want to see Hugh Dancy and his puppy face play a character who is always in a terrible situation?

3) Do I want to watch some uncomfortable yet strangely hot sex scenes with Hugh Dancy?

If you answered yes to any combination of those questions, The Path is the show for you.

I think I need to pack it up and quit the writing game because I will never ever get a compliment as good as "This is the shit Hugh Dancy reads and shows to Mads Mikkelsen" again. (Though in all seriousness, someone needs to tell me what elements of magic I cooked into that smut to make it so well liked because I can't figure it out, haha)
