ive read somewhere that kokichi was supposed to have six fingers on each hand originally. any thoughts on the symbolism in that?
Oh, you mean this?
I guess you could say-
...Sike, it was just an error! (A fuckin weird one to make on a sprite but OKAY!)
Or, huh. ...Actually. Hold on a beat. Setting aside that the right hand being five-fingered doesn’t mean the left one is
His first beta has... no sign of hands, and barely arms, for some reason. Unusual? A bit strange considering that others’ hands being a little obscured is... never to this extent (from what I can see, anyway- much of the time it’s just a hand stuffed into a pocket, in Hajime-beta’s case for one).
Still... considering the complete lack of visible hands here, it’s hard to denote anything for sure, seeing as there’s no clear source on this intention either, let alone any design notes on the betas to indicate it. Though I did find some interesting commentary about six fingered hands - besides the usual, ‘spiritual, godly, revered’ etc. - which is worth noting especially:
People also believe that having six fingers on your right hand is lucky. And, having an extra finger in your left hand brings ill-fortune.
...and uh, considering the name ‘Kokichi’ means ‘small luck’ it’s funny in a not-so-funny way how Ouma was... accidentally? (or I guess, trollingly?)...depicted in this one trailer with a sixth finger. ...On his left hand.
Well, if nothing else I may have to headcanon that he had a sixth finger removed very young, due to the superstition. Yowch.
