A little fic~! from Young Nightmare
Alighting in the nursery, the incubus looked down at the triplets where they lay in their cradles. He didn't know what had possessed him to return to the house, but couldn't shake the feeling that had drawn him to the room. His eyes, though they were their usual harsh contrasting black and red hues, softened as he gazed upon the sleeping infants, reading their peaceful thoughts while they were lost in dreamland.
He hesitated for but a moment before stepping softly forward, his eyes resting on the dark-haired little boy. The little one moved his hand in his sleep, swatting at the memory of a butterfly he had seen that day. He wished to see this odd but beautiful creature more closely, and wondered if the wings were as soft as they looked. He wanted to chase it, to see where it was flying off to, to follow it into its own land of magic and wonder, to adventure far and wide after the flitting, fluttering jewel. Smiling, the incubus rested a hand on Nicholas's forehead, and in his dreams, the young one was flying through the air along with a whole train of butterflies. They flew over the land, swirling around him and brushing their rainbow coloured wings softly against his cheeks. Far and wide they flew, eventually coming to rest back at the boy's home where they landed on every available surface, letting him observe them as they rested to his heart's content.
"Grow up to be strong and free, little one." the demon murmured, gently brushing the dark curls from the boy's face. Nicholas stirred slightly, but continued to dream while the incubus stepped softly over to the next cradle.
Katherina gave a small sneeze in her sleep, her face scrunching up as she remembered the ticklish smell of the flowers that had been by her cradle. She dreamed of the small bouquet, placed there by one of the no-eyes-ladies-who-was-not-mum. The colours and flowing lines of the blossoms had enticed her closer. The petals had been soft when she reached out to them, but had fallen away from the flower, coming loose when she grasped them in her tiny hand. She had then pulled the entire group of colourful things towards her, their softness enveloping her. She had lain there, uncaring even as the vase had crashed to the floor, until the smell made her scrunch her face up with the oddest sensation, sneezing until the flowers were removed. Giving a soft laugh, the incubus carefully touched a finger to the girl's forehead, filling the little one's dreams with an entire field of flowers. All around her were blooms of every shape and colour, roses, lilies, lotuses, daffodils, carnations, irises. A soft breeze blew through the meadow, sending petals dancing in the air for Katherina to enjoy.
"Continue to be curious, my dear... Find the beauty in the world and in those around you." he whispered, gently brushing his hand across the dark-haired girl's cheek before approaching the final cradle.
Nearing the fair-haired girl, he could see she was already stirring from her slumber. She blinked up at him, her eyes still hazed with fragments of dreams. He could see them, floating around her like crystalline bubbles, memories of the moments she held most dear. Being held by her mother, curling up close to her warmth and burying her face in the soft hair tumbling over her shoulder. Her father, his strong hands holding her gently and rocking her back and forth to lull her off to sleep. The man-who-was-not-dad showing her his magic, disappearing and reappearing with a wave of his hands, causing her to giggle with joy. Nightmare, his host, her brother, holding her after placing a soft hat on her hair. His eyes widened, however, when he viewed the next image though her mind. The person-who-was-not-brother, seen always behind her brother's eyes, but who she wanted to meet.
The incubus's heart melted as he looked down at Sofie. She reached out to him, gripping one of his hands in both of hers. The person-who-was-not-brother was here. She wanted to meet him. His caution crumbling before the little girl's curious eyes, he gingerly reached out to her. He picked her up cautiously, as if she would break if he touched her too harshly.
"May all the gods bless you, and may you find happiness in this life. You have such a beautiful heart, my sweet, sweet girl. May you always stay this way and grow up free from sorrow." The demon smiled, drawing her close as he gently rocked Sofie back and forth, placing a soft kiss on her brow as she slipped back into sleep, dreaming of her family.
Placing the girl back into her cradle, he stepped back, surveying the sleeping infants.
"May all your futures be bright." He smiled warmly one last time, before vanishing from the house.
