On This Day (7/21): The Tontons, Little Joe Washington, Fat Tony, and Giant Princess

Classic local Houston indie show here. I remember that the Caroline Collective was a kind of weird DIY art space, and I had never really seen a show at a place like that before. It was like a backyard show really. When I walked in, Giant Princess were already playing, but that was my introduction to them and they were fantastic. Everyone on this bill was actually really good. I’ve gone on and on about Fat Tony here and you can find old posts about him easily.
The Tontons blew my damn mind. Singer Asli Omar is one of the most impressive vocalists to come out of the whole Houston scene. I will forever love her and her contributions to music. This band has always just sounded complete and amazing since day one. I’ve often wondered how they haven’t blown up bigger in the same way their frequent tour mates the Suffers have.
Little Joe. Man, Little Joe was a Houston treasure. He was this old, old blues man who just brought joy and fun wherever he played. He was missing teeth and he’d use the few he had left to pick his guitar strings. He was just one of those people who made the Houston scene so wonderful and unique back in the day. It was a sad day when he passed on. A part of Houston lore died with him. But I’ll never forget seeing him play that guitar with his teeth that night at Caroline Collective.
