I'm having Big Thoughts about ocs lately.....
hiding them under the cut bc im shy
my character Daunte is an immortal who's been around rouuughly since the dawn of humanity. however you wanna look at that. And since I originally wrote this story at 15 years old there's,, a LOT I didn't think about back then: namely that a man who lives that long might have a few children/genetic non-immortal relatives kicking around. That and when I originally wrote it he had a sort-of romance with the other MC Helene, who was not immortal but like, also not Young. (she's in her thirties. yes I know that's not old but even as a teen I was like "why are immortals always hooking up w 20 year olds. weird. gross)
anyway. thinking about her asking if he has any children, if he's had any lovers that lasted, and him hemming and hawing and eventually saying he's just Above All That Mortal Stuff, he doesn't feel the need for a relationship/sex. And she's like sounds sus but fine, ok, I don't know any other timeless immortal men
but then in the second book she meets his brother (who they had to track down bc he's been missing/in stasis for a few hundo years) and the brother, Ettore, is VASTLY DIFFERENT. IE: tries to seduce Helene within like a week. and she's like okay so which one of you is full of shit, you or Daunte? and when he hears what Daunte said he laughs his ASS off. He's like yeah no that's not an immortal thing that's a Daunte thing and no, I never understood it either. And then Helene, who is realizing she's fallen for him in a non-strictly romantic kind of way goes oh SICK, I've got a chance
and that's how my drive to work this week ended with "ACE DAUNTE REAL AND HAS BEEN FOREVER." I never really decided whether I wanted Helene and Daunte to be together in that series (which I only wrote one book of) but I can now definitely say they're super weird about whatever they end up doing tbh. She's going to corner him like "I think I would like to spend the rest of my mortal life with you" and he's like yeah hey. bad idea. but she talks him into it. She's obnoxious like that.
The name of the series actually is Mortal Minds and thematically it's kinda,, about how Daunte IS an immortal with magic etc etc, but at the end of the day he has a human body and mind and he's not that different or special. Hes just some guy and that's all he really WANTS to be. His goals in the series are as follows: 1: find brother (missing! very bad! Miss him!) 2: heal Helene from the mysterious magical disease she has (very bad, killing her, cut infected arm off as possible cure??) and 3: figure out how to become mortal bc the entropy. The ENTROPY.
DID YOU THINK I'D REACHED MY CONCLUSION?? no. not even CLOSE. I have a SECOND book that I've been thinking about a lot lately, this one about political bullshit in a VERY low fantasy world and how one woman scholar goes from baby sister with no responsibility to last surviving (politically viable) member of the royal family and reigning monarch. She also makes fun accomplishments along the way such as: getting stabbed! finding an extremely softboy spouse from the neighboring enemy kingdom, becoming a fearsome warrior king leading an army of foreigners to save her homeland from colonizers, and more!
primarily I've been thinking about how to trim the fat off it. The first draft ended up being um...aheem...140,000 words....... and it was split into a part 1, part 2, so I think it probably really just needs to be a duology? lest I tolkien it. but I digress. The inciting incident of the series is that her older sister, the king-elect (their culture has a unisex word for the king) is murdered like. a week before she's supposed to take over from her ailing father.
the story was originally about her trying to solve her sister's murder and being in competition with her cousins, whom her father's court thinks are more qualified for the throne than her. I think I overcomplicated it with the world building and need to tone it down a little bit and also fix some holes/errors with the world building, but the story has a lot of promise and I really like it. I'm really fond of it and definitely want to get back to it someday, but right now I'm so busy with work and being chronically ill that I can't even write my little 2k word fic for a zine SOOO. priorities.
this has been oc rambling with ghost, the part of the show where ghost comes out and does a ramble. Thank you for attending, tune in next time to see ghost lose her mind about raphael ninja turtle again
